This seems to show poor planning on the part of the FNM. Just like Carnival, this event could have been opened to and funded by the private sector.

We can only wait and see what happens. My greatest hope is that the industry is opened to the "small man" and that, like Jamaica, everyone can pay a relatively small fee to be a grower or a supplier. However, past actions in the Bahamas would suggest that everything will be done by the Government to ensure the licenses are very costly and only a few privledged cronies are allowed to buy them.

BahamaPundit says...

RE BMW you are correct. The Government is not liable at law to pay in this matter. However, there will likely be huge consequences for our country if the injured Americans are not compensated for their loss, should the boat owner not have personal injury insurance. In order to avoid those consequences and international condemnation, the Government would pay the costs that should have been covered by the boat owner's insurance.

BahamaPundit says...

I don't think anyone really cares what the lawyer or the boat owner have to say in defense of themselves. All we want to know is whether or not the boat owner had the required personal injury insurance. Insurance is hinted at in the article, but this could just be in reference to damage or theft to the boat. Can anyone clarify this?

The biggest reason they are slow to decriminalize cannabis is big alcohol is lobbying against it and Ministers own shares in Commonwealth Brewery. As soon as they find a way to ensure that a few elites get the lion share of the profits and can lock out unconnected Bahamians, cannabis will be legalized.

Re John I agree completely. It's as if Minnis is pulling from an outdated book on political strategy. Divert attention, red herring. But he's so slow at it and obvious; it's laughable.

Due to the rarity of boats exploding, it is likely that the determanent factor in this matter was that the boat was home-made, so it likely did not have the same safety features as factory built boats, such as non flamable materials used or reinforcement of the gas tank etc.
