You make some good points. Just remember that Emera isn't a charity and with 9000 paying customers it makes it difficult to make economic sense for them to make electricity cheaper. I bet they don't make much now, what with the effects of Mathew and now Dorian. The government should never have sold their stake to begin with. We need jobs and an environment for business to flourish. That will bring people back to the island, money in people's pocket so that they can afford electricity. Maybe one day it'll get better.
A responsible government should have full disclosure on where and how much was spent. This could be Minnis'finest moment ! Let's hope he and his ministers can resist the temptation tto take some cash for themselves. If I see some fancy new cars driving around someone gonna get hurt real bad
This certainly is great news, but like a few other people already pointed out this is a signed "letter of intent" NOT a bill of sale. A LIO and a nickle won't buy you a cup of coffee. One good thing is that it's not just about the hotel purchase. Clearly these guys understand that it'll take marketing and additional infrastructure to make this investment successful. This is also some hope for the workers that currently are having a hard time making ends meet. Here's hoping that the deal closes!
What do you mean "giveaway"? If not foreign interests then who else is prepared to run with the ball? It foreign interests that have the money and are prepared to take the risk of making any business viable on GBI. That damn hotel has been closed for over 2 years and who knows what kind of state its in currently and how much it will take to restore it. I'm not aware of any bidding war if it was such a great deal!! It'll take millions of dollars to re-build the brand and I'm not talking just paint and drywall. What do you mean by cronies benefiting big time? Are you suggesting that a politician is on the take? Say it ain't so!! That hotel has put a couple of thousand people out of work. People have had to move away to seek employment and the ones that have stayed have to either do without or take multiple jobs to make ends meet. The National Debt has climbed through gross mismanagement voted in by the people.
