think about it like this, imagine a life boat that can only hold 20 maximum compacity, there is 50 more that want to get on...Do u put the extra 50 on and sink and all die or do u help that 20 that are lets say your family members first... It is not because u do not have compassion, or moral virtue that u make the decisions, its because u are saving those that u valued the most... Now when u get to safety it is then your obligation to get help immediately to the others...

Bahamianpride says...

What my fellow Bahamians don't understand is its not about heartlessness, its about compassion for your own people.. It is cruel to allow poor people to inhabit these conditions and regardless what other countries allow, the true unholiness is to not encourage and support those in Poverty to improve there living conditions.. I grew up in these shanty situations and its a degrace to allow fellow Bahamians People to live in them.. The Billions that come through this country has not been properly invested in the Bahamian People, there is just not that many of us.. Whether it be political corruption or whatever, it makes no sense in the year 2013 in the Bahamas that people should live that way... The true inhumanity is those who would justify this as a worldwide occurance, the world, haiti, jamaica is not my problem, i am a bahamian and one with self worth.. you feed and house your own before u worry about other peoples problems, anything else is suicidal.. It is not our inhumanity for the Haitian or anyone else its our love for ourselves, I want to help the world but if it came down to a decision of whether my kids eat or your kids eat, my kids are going to eat first.. After they eat your kids can have the left overs, so if we have some left overs send it to haiti or other countries to help them.. I don't get this self sacrificing suicidal ultruism we live by because it has no real virtue and shows no compassion for the Poor.. Help poor Bahamians help themselves so they can no longer be impoverished, now thats real compassion and morality... I dont want poor bahamian kids living in disease infested shanty towns, it destroys there self worth and breeds crime, put a stop to it, invest the money into education, training, housing for Bahamian... Lets stop feeling bad for other people until all of our people are living in a respectable condition, it can be done, there is just not that many of us... I listen to people complain about the homeless, Poor, and give all these bleeding heart theories, but when i ask if they care so much why dont the take one home they shut up quick..

Bahamianpride says...

The Shanty towns are a disgrace.. Tal is right.. The money exist to address this situation, and there are many who profit from these cesspits... There is a limitted amount of space on these islands and no room for substandard housing.. Billions come through the country each year and what i see is a failure on the part of the government to encourage modern affordable housing for the poor.. These structures should be knocked down, and the land seized, if the people staying there are legal Bahamian Citizens, place these people in temporary housing until an affordable housing is available.. If they are illegal immigrants or immigrants send them home, we have to help our own people first before we can worry about the citizens of other countries.. Why are we so concern about the citizens of other countries destroying our landscape with santy towns.. If u come to this country have the means to support yourself and make a contribution or leave.. Tell them they can come back when they are ready to contribute to making the Bahamas a better place to live, not add to our problems.

Bahamianpride says...

Billions of Dollars come through the Bahamas each year so funding the removal and proper relocation of the people is not the problem... The problem is no one has the political will or genuine disire to do it the right way. The P.M. and Other leaders know how to address the problems, but when there purpose in life is for the advancement of themselves, family or cronnies, Putting the Bahamian people first is not on there agenda.. It is almost the mentality of Post traumatic slave syndrome, where even in Freedom the slave is traumatized and never sees himself equal to the master, so he Panders...When u see yourself and your country as a value worth peserving, then u act in the best interest of your country... When u do not, u make laws and rules that discriminates against your own people. Foreigners make a killing of the Bahamas because the political and ruling class let them...Deals are made that benefit them personally but screw the population.. Foreign capital is necessary but the deals that are made on behalf of the Bahamian people are some of the worse ever, with no long term consideration of the social and economic consequences to the average citizen.. This i believe is why we have so much poverty in this country..

I hope in the process of getting rid of these shanty Towns the Government strongly reconsiders a plan for population redistribution.. Nassau has to many people living on the 21 by 7 space... There are numerous large family islands with ample space...Yes I know Nassau has all of the resources but we can work on further development for the Family Islands... And please do not rebuild anything on these lands, everyone just needs a little elbow room..

Tal and Concerned make valid points... the question is as a nation how do u address the problem... First the government and citizens must accept that it is the problem.. We cannot stop irresponsible people from having sex, that's there right, nor can we make demands that until u are of fit mind and substance u have no right to produce children, its a violation of individual civil rights and would be discrimination. The only options we have with the heavy influence of pop culture that fuels irresponsibility is education and a stronger push for contraception.. But then there is a segment of our society that need to be arrested for continuing to not use proper contraception and bringing more children into this world.. How do u hold these people accountable or educate them to stop doing this Concernedcitizen? To tal how would u tackle the social problems that exist if u where Prime Minister?

Bahamianpride says...

concernedcitizen: I appreciate the Objective nature of your argument.. Mathematically birth rates are too high to be sustained by the economy.. I have also believed for the longest that Nassau has too many people living on the island.. I know this is where the resources are but a tremendous population shift needs to happen with further infrastructure investment in the family islands. Perhaps a further shift to eco tourism would be the key.. The question is how do we address the issue of populations growth, illegal immigration and get it under control

Tal makes a valid point.. That is an unacceptable situation because its costing the Bahamian people large sums of money to house, feed and provide medical care for these minor offenders and highlights a dysfunctional Judicial System. The Minister is right about the role of Men.. The issue becomes how has the role of men changed in our culture and how does that influence the selection by young women of the men they choose to procreate with.. Poverty, Pop culture and the lack of a proper male role model has an influence on this... Then there are those young ladies who are given the proper upbringing but still choose to associate with Pop cultures example of a Man.. Materialism is a factor... The cash and defiant swagger of the Thug and the portrayal of a certain adventurous lifestyle can draw young women with them if there morals are not strong in determining what a respectable man should be... Men are motivated to do most things for the prize of a women, so if women raised the standards and stop associating with the low lifers, it would be amazing how quickly this irresponsible breeding and single parent nonsense would come to an end.. Remember in high school the girls went for the Bad Asses or Guys with money. Along with this dialog about Men we must address the Virtues of today many young women seek in a partner..
