Actually, it has been about two years according to the article. How is it the fault of Bahamians after 20 years when she just applied 2 years ago and her parents ignored this duty for the first 18 years of her life? The reason for the backlog is obvious. The entire system and process is overwhelmed. If she had a Haitian passport I am sure the naturalization process would be much smoother. She and her parents are to blame for her predicament. The claims of her parents being legal are suspect, as it makes no sense why they would not have started this process much sooner.

The fact that she is going once again to a government clinic for services leading up to and including the birth of baby number four, by age 21 no less, screams that she is indeed a burden to society.

If her parents are indeed legal residents, there is absolutely no reason why they should not have gotten this straightened out prior to her 18th birthday. The blame is on them, her, and the Haitian Embassy that is refusing to give her a passport, if that is indeed the case. As the child of two born Haitian nationals she is not stateless since she is entitled to the nationality of her parents.

Just wow. It sounds like right around the age when she should have been gathering her documents and making her application for citizenship, which is prior to her 19th birthday, she was much too busy being pregnant with baby number 3 and all. Talk about foolishness!

Regarding the issue of under-qualified Bahamians, can we also discuss why Bahamians with degrees can only find work at Wendy's and other low wage positions? That is precisely why many Bahamians with degrees dread returning home and why some actually don't return. Five BGCSEs for a cashier's job? Hopefully they meant five BJCs. Anyone with five BGCSEs with good grades, I assume, would have higher aspirations. I agree with Damian Gomez, that being frank with people about the abysmal state of education in their own communities is an important start.

This is a very interesting choice of representation by the FNM senator. And by interesting, I mean curious. It makes me even more uncomfortable with the notion of the FNM returning to power. And by uncomfortable, I mean even more uncomfortable than having the PLP return to power.

Cas0072 says...

I will credit the PLP with having great ideas, like BAMSI and even NHI. So far they are not doing a good job of bringing those ideas to fruition.

Mr. Gray should definitely be removed from his post as MP for MICAL, and all Family Island administrators should definitely be stripped of the authority to hold these three in one legal proceedings. They should maybe be able to recommend cases, but not preside and sentence if they have no formal legal training.

It sounds like what you are requesting on behalf of the prospective ambassador, is what we as a nation want to expect of her. That is, to not jump to conclusions, whether it is on one issue or several. However, I am prepared to do that as I believe she was asked a pointed question and she is not currently in a position to provide a more well rounded response. I also do not believe that Bahamians are asking for the US to jump into our affairs, but since they do it anyway, suggest solutions or provide assistance instead of grand standing.

To stop the leak, we need to start in Haiti. We will never have enough boats and man power to patrol every square mile effectively enough. Unfortunately, and not just in the case of human smuggling, the criminals always seem to be ahead of the law. We need to amend our laws to specifically address the repercussions of illegal immigration. Once that is done, we need to get the message out to potential illegal immigrants that the trip will be a waste of their time and money because they will never become citizens, that they will be swiftly repatriated, and banned from this country permanently.

I have never provided my opinions as fact. You should simply learn to recognize the difference.
