Poor Neil Hartnell has fallen for the lie that Franklyn Wilson is working in a partnership with Tiger Woods. Tiger’s firm has been hired to design a golf course. Period. And it’s not even an actual golf course, it’s a 10-hole “short course.”
Tiger Woods does not have one thin dime of his own money invested in that development, and it’s a shame that Mr. Hartnell has been sucked into repeating the phony story that Mr. Wilson and Mr. Woods are partners there. The moment the checks start bouncing, Mr. Woods will bounce outta there as well.
Dear Ms. Pinder: Excellent essay. Like you, I hope the Disney plan does *not* succeed. You correctly noted several times the “bias” in the pro-Disney movement. But your essay is guilty of serious bias of its own:
Like many others backing the LPP alternative, you have failed to note that it relies on an economic alliance with a foreign-owned, upscale hotel group who plan to build a 100-unit “eco lodge” at The Point. Boiled to its essence, that would be a 100-room hotel, the largest hotel ever built on Eleuthera. (The inclusion of that hotel was noted in a news story posted on this newspaper’s website yesterday. That group’s hotel rooms on Harbour Island rent for up to $1,000 a night in high season.)
Question: Where does the “eco-electricity” and “eco-water” come from to support a 100-unit hotel? How do they “eco-wash” 100 sets of sheets and towels each day? How do they “eco-air-condition a 100-unit hotel? How is it “eco friendly” to include a restaurant that would need to feed 3 meals a day to up to 200 hotel guests, as there is no other place to eat anywhere near Lighthouse Point? And how would it be “eco-friendly” to build the 2-lane paved roadway that would be necessary to transport these guests?
Again, I hope Disney fails. But in fairness, both sides of this coin need to be examined.
Princess Cruise Line has operated their nearby “private island” for +20 years, similar to the Disney plan, and has not managed to sully HI’s image. I think the words Disney and “cruise ship” freak out a lot of people. I’m no fan of either, but a 100-room hotel is no great tradeoff, either.
I don’t know if “trick” or “puppet master” are fair, but the supposedly “eco friendly” proposal includes plans for the largest hotel — 100 rooms — ever built on Eleuthera. Eco friendly? That’s a whole lotta A/C ... where will the electric come from? A new oil fired generating plant? Diesel generators?
Oh, he may well be the best to do that ... but Shaun will realize that Fred’s gonna expect to get paid, up front, and then that injunction idea will quickly disappear — especially as it has no chance of succeeding.
One problem with your theory: Thomas Sands, a staunch PLP whose family runs the largest and most successful business operation in South Eleuthera, also supports the Disney plan.
Has the Bahamas considered taking this issue before the United Nations, to seek economic sanctions against these “pirates” from the Dominican Republic? This is, in the end, a 21st Century version of piracy.
