I am beginning to believe that the only thing a Bahamian public employee can do effectively is remember to order lunch on time. Mmmmm. Chickin’ wings today ... !!
If you want to “test” your restaurants’ power supply, you do that at 4 a.m., while the guests are all in bed, not at lunchtime. Really, this story smells funny.
Uh ... unlike the Bahamas, electricity in the U.S. is not supplied by a government agency. The electric utilities are private companies. So, respectfully, your comparison simply does not work.
Say what you will about the U.S., but over there they actually do put a few crooked politicians in prison, and you don’t have to pay “lunch money” to get your phone line fixed or your vehicle registration renewed.
As usual with Mr. Hartnell’s reports, the best stuff is buried far down in the story:
“ ... the IDB document branded government transactions “a hotbed of corruption” with 20 percent of Bahamians surveyed reporting they had paid a bribe to access public services - a percentage only exceeded by Guyana.
“The Bahamas also ranked among the hemisphere’s lowest with just 5 percent of government services accessible online, and no functional electronic platform that combines these services so that applicants do not have to resubmit the same information twice.”
