The CEO only verbalized what is actually the case. Far too many Bahamian workers are incompetant, lazy and unproductive, especially in gov corporations and depts and then have the audacity to demand premium pay. The unions has also played a major role in this mess we are in. Its about time that a spade is called a spade and if it takes a foreigner to do it, I say more power to them

Well_mudda you are absolutely correct about how the electrical distribution system is supppsed to react to a fault, be it caused by a tree an illegal dumper or what ever the cause.

Bottom line, a single fault, and faults happen all the time in power distribution systems, causing the entire grid to go down reveals another major problem with BPL, the grid is very unstable. And this has very little to do generating capacity. In modern well designed and maintained grids, such faults will very rarely cause such an event.

Its obvious that Bannister is believing what the folks at BPL is feeding him. I can almost forgive the Minister after all he is not a technician, he must rely upon the "experts". What worries me is the very people at BPL who should know better probably believe these same excuses also.

This reveals the single biggest problem with BPL, extreme incompetance. These people should not be allowed near our expensive and critical national assets.

To the powers that be please stop buying these excuses and demand more. There is absolutely no reason in this modern world that our grid should be this unstable and unreliable

BPL is so good at generating excuses it is exhausting. Now they blame the fire in their Bimini power plant, which of course is their fault. The bottom line is BPL does not properly maintain their equipment. They run these generators until the fail, basically run them into the ground and then they complain about old equipment being the fault. All one has to do is enter one of the power houses to get a sense of how they maintain their facilities and equipment. The Bimini disaster could have been avoided with proper maintenance. Bottom line these people dont know what they are doing and should be allowed around our expensive, critical national assets. 10-15 years from now someone from BPL will be giving same excuses as to why the Wartsila power plant is failing. Mark my words

Craig says...

The electricity consumer in this country has been tolerating BPL's inemptitude for 40 plus years. Now they are trying to convince us that this new Wartsila power plant will solve problems that have been 40 years plus in the making, please. They are fooling themselves. These problems will take decades to fix and that's with a competent management team. Its high time that BPL is upfront with they problems they facing, and provide a plan to fix them.

Its clear that he sold a bill of goods to the powers that be and they bought it hook line and sinker, cause after all who in the current Gov cabinet, or any cabinet or the board or any board have the slightest idea of what is best for a power company let alone selection of its leader? The gov of the Bahamas has no place in the electricity generation business. How long will it take for the sucessive line of egotistical politicians learn that

Craig says...

Lets face it, these people are incompetent, from the Chairman and CEO all the way down. The only thing they are good at generating is excuses, it certainly isn't electrical power. Now they are blaming the weather, please. And whats even more hilarious are the new words and phrases they have introduced to their press release lexicon, "anomaly" and "generating assets". Adding fancy words and phrases to press releases doesn't change the fact that the entire management team at BPL are simply out of their depth.

I wholeheartedly agree with Rick Lowe. For a company that is having problems, and having successive losses is a sign of major problems, having to pay taxes almost guarantees business failure. If anything the government should have policies in place that tries to help such businesses, it would be a win-win for everyone. Additionally anyone in the construction business in this country can attest that profits as percentage of revenue is very low, therefore having to pay a tax on revenue as a apposed to profits makes it exceedingly difficult to survive

On Law shouldn't 'tax you out of business'

All this fancy talk of bond refinancing and the like is just a means to pay back for all the incompetent management and disastrous decisions successive management teams and government boards have made in the past 40 plus years. What will give the public confidence that the next 40 years will be any different? In all honesty the current board and management leadership isn't doing anything to inspire confidence that anything will change. Look at what has happened since the new leadership took over; the worst disaster in BPL's history, destroying a $100mil power plant with zero accountability. Then there was the BPL board fiasco, how that was handled says a whole lot about the capability of the decision makers. This does not bode well.
