The responsible party is probably a PLP trying to make the FNM look bad. Unless people are held accountable for such a screw up the public service will never improve.

This news is alarming. It follows logically from the good Minister admitting that additional building inspectors must be hired that there are too little currently hired to do the job, most likely far too little. It then follows easily that not all the required inspections are being conducted. If that is the case most likely incompetant and corrupt contractors are getting away with substantial short cuts and shoddy work. Considering the level of damage that happened to the structures in Abaco Freeport, couldn't the shoddy workmanship and short cuts as a result of lack of proper inspections on the part of the MOW, have contributed to the devistation being must worst than it may have been, or I dare say contributed to some of the fatalities. All one has to do is to look at the devistation in the Mud. Far too many of those dwellings were not fit for human habitation due to code violations, much less built to withstand hurricane conditions. In my mind the MOW should be held accountable in large part due to lack of sufficient inspectors being a contributing factor in the devistation.

There's a lot riding on this new power plant. They are portraying it as the end of all their problems. Yeah right. These problems are 40 years in the making. Unless these new generators can perform magic, their problems will continue.

Are you saying that BPL had competency prior to Heastie and Rollins? Surely you jest. Anyone with sufficient knowledge of the generation, transmission and distribution plant prior to those two would surely beg to differ. The mess we are in is 40 plus years in the making. I blame the successive decision makers, politicians like Bannister and Miller before him. These politicians have no clue what it takes to make a power company successful. There is nothing in their background to suggest otherwise. As a result, critical decisions, like selecting the board and the top management and making strategic choices are deeply flawed. As a result we the consumers have to pay the price. The cost of electricity is obscenely high and reliability is practically non-existent. Then there are the power quality issues, it is horrible. This is evident from all the damaged electronics, appliances and air-conditioning equipment consumers have to endure. To the Powers that Be, please, please i beg of you, get out of the electrical power business. bpl and those who run and operate the company, past and present, had their chance but failed miserably. please put it in the hands of experts and introduce competition!!!

Why do we bring politics into everything? BPL's problems are 45 years in the making. The Minnis gov isn't the cause of the problems, but they certainly aren't helping, in fact they are making things worst. The problems are simply gross obscene incompetance and corruption.

I blame sucessive governments and in particular the PLP for this monster they created called the unions. This Maynard character can speak publicly with impunity it seems. If there is anyone who should leave this country and never return, it should be this fool. He should be considered a national threat and dealt with appropriately. The nonesence he spews is downright dangerous.

Craig says...

The CEO only verbalized what is actually the case. Far too many Bahamian workers are incompetant, lazy and unproductive, especially in gov corporations and depts and then have the audacity to demand premium pay. The unions has also played a major role in this mess we are in. Its about time that a spade is called a spade and if it takes a foreigner to do it, I say more power to them

Well_mudda you are absolutely correct about how the electrical distribution system is supppsed to react to a fault, be it caused by a tree an illegal dumper or what ever the cause.

Bottom line, a single fault, and faults happen all the time in power distribution systems, causing the entire grid to go down reveals another major problem with BPL, the grid is very unstable. And this has very little to do generating capacity. In modern well designed and maintained grids, such faults will very rarely cause such an event.

Its obvious that Bannister is believing what the folks at BPL is feeding him. I can almost forgive the Minister after all he is not a technician, he must rely upon the "experts". What worries me is the very people at BPL who should know better probably believe these same excuses also.

This reveals the single biggest problem with BPL, extreme incompetance. These people should not be allowed near our expensive and critical national assets.

To the powers that be please stop buying these excuses and demand more. There is absolutely no reason in this modern world that our grid should be this unstable and unreliable

Craig says...

BPL is so good at generating excuses it is exhausting. Now they blame the fire in their Bimini power plant, which of course is their fault. The bottom line is BPL does not properly maintain their equipment. They run these generators until the fail, basically run them into the ground and then they complain about old equipment being the fault. All one has to do is enter one of the power houses to get a sense of how they maintain their facilities and equipment. The Bimini disaster could have been avoided with proper maintenance. Bottom line these people dont know what they are doing and should be allowed around our expensive, critical national assets. 10-15 years from now someone from BPL will be giving same excuses as to why the Wartsila power plant is failing.
