I am a licensee of the Port Authority and I prefer the Port Authority running Freeport than the Government on any given day. The government shouldn't be allowed to run a petty shop. Everything the government touches it rans it into the ground. Examples include NIB, Bank of the Bahamas, BPL, Bahamas Air and numerous others.
The problem is not wages but expenses. The Bahamas has one of the highest wages in the world but also has one of the highest cost of living. Reduce the cost of living and the need for higher wages wouldn't be a factor. One way to reduce expenses is to buy directly from Mexico rather than the middleman in Florida. A mango in Mexico costs ten cent. That same mango in the Bahamas costs three dollars. Problem solve.
The government has a report card on Grand Bahama in the form of East End, Pinder’s Point and West End. The Port has a report card in the form of Freeport. The difference is obvious. What Freeport need is promotion.
Whatever the Grand Bahama Port Authority is, the Government is worst. Case and Point, East End, West End and Eight Mile Rock. They can't blame the Port Authority for the state of those settlements.
As a nation we keep making the same dumb mistakes over and over. It doesn't take a King's Council to win these cases. A first-year law student could win such cases. I could guarantee you there is someone sitting in Fox Hill prison or the detention center who is been held illegally. I have always been of the opinion that the government purposely create scenarios to keep the fraternity of lawyers working.
