Might be a bit dissatisfied with the FNM, but that is no where near the complete revulsion i feel for the current leaders of the PLP, as you lot are a major reason for the state we are in (Cooper not included as he is new, however due to who he is associated with it won't take much for him to be included).

Dawes says...

Ha, nothing will happen, until we the people say we have had enough and vote accordingly. Both parties are basically raping us when in power and all along the civil servants and the unions are doing the same. The only thing thats going to stop it is the bills are starting to pile up more then the money they can raise.

Why? In the UK you have gas pipped into your house from the depot just as you have water here (if you on WSC). So a pipe of about 7 miles is not too hard to do.

This is just a normal Government run entity. Run for the benefit of certain people and not the Bahamian public. A lot of people will see nothing wrong with this and be appalled that the current Government let so many people go , but when income tax is started or VAT goes up to 15% they will scream and shout but not see the connection.

The real fact for Freeport is no one wants to open a hotel there and the last thing any Government wants to do is own the hotel. If people wanted to they would have done, and you can guarantee Government has offered numerous tax exemptions as an incentive to do this as they need this to happen. Shame as it is a nicely laid out city, but the port is probably one of the issues that is causing this. Somehow government needs Freeport's other industries to take off to cover for the fact that it really isn't a tourist destination.

There are T-shirt stores on Bay Street or in the surrounding area which pay a lot more then $40 a week (and yes still more if you extrapolated the size of each store). They are selling many of the same items the straw market does. How are they able to make it when they have the additional overhead of electricity etc which the straw market does not? This is the same everywhere the Government provides areas for Bahamians to sell their wares. I am sure we will find out that many have not paid their rent at potters cay or fish fry, and yet these rents are considerably lower then what someone would have to pay if they were on private land and not public land. If this was a private landlord they would have been kicked out a long time ago, but as its Government it is always woe is me. As it has turned political no doubt the Government will back down and we will be one step closer to them raising taxes on all of us to ensure all those who suck off of the Governments teat never have to pay their way.

Whats really worrying is the last few Governments get an F in Freeport, and this is not due to a lack of trying. I don't know enough about Freeport to know what is causing it, but no-one seems to want those hotels. The hotels being open would be a short term strategy in stabilising Freeport, then work on other industries. At a guess though it probably is all to do with the interactions between the Port on one side, Government on the other and whoever is willing to jump into that mix in the middle.

We're going to yet again have to agree to disagree. On the issue of the bank above we will probably hear they have shipped off more of the back office work to another Caribbean island if they really want whoever the person was in that job.

Which company is this person going to work for coming from? Why would a foreign entity come if there is no benefits to them. So if it is a Bahamian company who would they be doing the work for? You make it sound so simple that i always ask why is this not being done right now by everybody over here, and if it is, why is it not being done on a large enough scale to employ all the people who are unemployed. Companies will always do whats best for their bottom line, so if thats hiring a Bahamian or a foreigner thats what they will do.
