So there are no Bahamian workers in the offshore banks or Casino? And having these industries here has not benefited these people?

Dawes says...

There was no death though. There was a shooting which should not have happened and i agree there should have been an investigation, however there was no death.

We didn't have the protection of the UK (for Cayman, Bermuda and Turks), and were afraid of the ramifications of blacklisting.. It would have happened one day no matter what, but the shortsightedness was not trying to change the product we offered (and for this the private sector is to blame as well).

The end of privacy did not have to be the death of financial services, but we allowed it to be. We needed to step up our game. Up till then our marketing was we are tax free and won't talk about your money thats here. That has changed and we needed to become financial advisers, giving sound advice for people. As it is we still talk about being tax free when that boat has sailed.

There was no deaths. How is that Manslaughter? If there was a death the driver of the truck is the one who would be tried for it. I am all for immigration as long as it is legal and benefits the country. I do not agree with illegal immigration and believe Government needs to ensure those who are illegal are sent back to wherever they came from. However this needs to be done in a legal and humane way.

This is why Government should be encouraging VRBO on all family islands. And then encourage the descendants in Nassau to build on the family islands and rent to the tourists. They would then need a local caretaker, plus the tourists would spend money at restaurants and bars etc. There is no need for huge hotels on the family islands as this would destroy them. Keep it small and personal.

Unfortunately a number of your other ideas would either not work or would already compete with businesses already opened by people from the island (every island has at least one bar / nightclub). But if people felt there was money to be made in it they would do it.

Whilst at times Immigration is over the top, RB is trying to make a mountain out of a molehill. If the illegal driver had not tried to evade immigration this would not have occurred (if the illegal was not here it would not have occurred). The fault lies at the feet of this child's mother and the driver. To try to stop immigration from doing their jobs by using this example is sad and makes it harder for those who have legitimate grievances with immigration. And finally the idea that they shouldn't deport the child as at 18 they can apply for citizenship is also wrong. Of course they can deport her, and when she reaches 18 she can then apply from wherever she is. If RB wants her to stay here without her mother then Fred needs to pay for her schooling, housing and all other expenses she may incur.

Bahamas gets a number of jobs depending on the size of the company, all the taxes that said company would pay, the rent from the company (or tax if the real estate is purchased). The knowledge transfer for the people working in the company, the foreign currency being brought in. And many other items.

However i can see that these items do not matter to you. You would rather we didn't try this and continue as is with something thats not working. I am sure you would say the Government should have it so Bahamians do it, by giving them funds. But then you would scream blue murder when the Government has to put up taxes to get the revenue to pay for these. As it is there is Nothing to stop you from setting up your own company to compete against these companies, however you won't. You will instead just blame foreigners and the Government for not giving it to you on a plate.

Dawes says...

How many Bahamians now work in offshore banks or in the casino, which when they first came here, you would be hard pressed to see Bahamians. Thousands who have benefited from these industries coming here, and are either working here or overseas. This is the trickle down that people would hope happens.

Dawes says...

It's always If. At any point in time the Government of the day can change the law to what they want, as long as it doesn't affect the Constitution. This was the case with the last Government and will be the case with the next. 5 years ago we had no carnival, then the Government wanted one so there was one. Currently this Government says only those industries named, next Government may amend. Thats how Governments work.
