pretty much every Govt says this and then does nothing. I don't see any reason to think this will be any different. We desperately need a functioning land registry, however the powers that be would lose too much if there was so there is no incentive to change what we have now.
This has needed to happen for a long time. Though it will only work if they get rid of business license. Corporate Tax works as it would be on the companies profit, business license sometimes helps to ensure a company makes a loss as it must be paid no matter how the company did. In addition with double taxation treaties companies foreign based companies would not be at a disadvantage and it may even encourage them to be based here.
Jamaica did sink to lows a while ago, however they have turned themselves around and are starting to see good results. Our hope must be that we can do the same, however chances are we won't as we would rather sit and complain about everyone else causing us to have it hard, rather then accept that we do it to ourselves.
What should the Government do per you? Keep them employed although they do not need them? This will only continue to add to our public debt, and will no doubt ensure that there will be a tax rise soon. I feel they are doing the right thing, even though it is a tragedy for those involved, the country must right the ship otherwise it will be a tragedy for all of us. The last 40 odd years of spending what we don't have has to come to an end, otherwise we will soon no longer be on parity with the USD and will no doubt have more taxes. As a note for me the jury is still out on whether this government will do what needs to be done, so we shall see.
Bahamians are too accepting. In other countries (notably Francophone ones) the people would be demanding accountability and heads to roll. We will grumble a bit and move on. This is what both Governments expect to happen and they are probably right. Whilst i can understand having to bail out the bank, to do so and not have one of the directors in court and not only naming all who have the non performing loans but going after every other asset they have, should be a national embarrassment. But we will just carry on whilst us the taxpayers are made to cough up more to cover these political connected people, from all political parties.
And yet their murder rate is 0.92 per 100,000 compared to Bahamas 30. They don't need to have cook outs when a family member is sick. For the most part their Government schools work well and a majority of children go on to University. Such a Ghetto, must be terrible to live there.
If the fundamental problem is one of economics and in particular the high land values, then a very simple fix is for the land to be valued at a value it can sell for, which is considerably lower then what it is now. What the Christies really mean is the owners will only accept a certain amount for their land, and do not care if it sits there unused until they get that, as they can afford it.
Fully agree on the idea of a lotto. I have travelled to the UK and nearly every sporting club and playgrounds have signs that say built using donations from the national lottery. We need to do the same here.
All sounds great, but if thats the case shouldn't we all be demanding that the British come back and take us over. We would then be in a bigger state, with more bargaining power and a stronger economy. The fact of the matter is that having the right to choose to be independent and then be independent is more important then those items you noted. And if the Scottish and Catalonia's feel they would live better as an independent nation then so be it. Though i have to admit it i don't see the point in Barbuda being independent, but yet again thats up to them as they will be the ones who will have to live with it.
So you want to do checks on all people coming here? How do you propose to do this for cruise passengers who are only here for 6 hours? Or should we tell them not to come off the ship. And will we be advertising this for the passengers at the airport, as i am sure that will help them decide whether to come here or not.
