What I do not understand is all this whining. The purpose of charging .25 cents per bag is to discourage customers from using them and from the feedback it is working. Be responsible and bring your reusable bags or get a box from the store but for heavens sake grow up and stop the complaining. I swear this country is populated by a bunch of irresponsible whining children masquerading as adults.
You are 100% right. I retired in my early 40s, simply opened a brokerage account in my early 20s saved like crazy and invested well. It takes discipline, sacrifice and a bit of luck but too many Bahamians think it is not possible. I am living proof it is. This writer saved nothing, retired early and expected his government pension would cover all, totally unrealistic.
Your pension amounts to $15,000 per year and quite frankly that is much higher than I expected. I think the problem here is that many Bahamians expect to be able to live comfortably solely on their pension, this clearly is unrealistic. With the continual increase in the cost of living each year it is becoming even more so.
In 25 years of public service you were unable to amass any personal savings for your golden years? Clearly you were unable to purchase a home which would have alleviated the need to rent. Bahamians need to prepare and SAVE for their retirement. Preferably owning their own home (mortgage free) and reducing expenses as much as possible. I have planned for my retirement with the expectation that I will receive nothing from NIB or the government and will have to self fund all my living expenses.
I did not always agree with his business analysis but I respected and appreciated it. It saddens me greatly that there are no more of his columns to look forward to. My condolences to his family.

What a load of crap. This govt pays lip service to renewable energy while at the same time frustrating Bahamians who want to solarize at every turn. The restrictions and red tape are unbelievable. Everything is engineered to protect BPL and have us enslaved to them forever. The fact that living in Long Island I am prevented by legislation to have a system larger than 4kw proves it. Lift these restrictions and allow me to put in a system that fully covers my electrical usuage and I will believe, otherwise this hypocritical govt is just lying when it comes to renewable energy.
There is a a very clear understanding for civil servants: you will have far more job security and work much less harder than private sector workers along with a lower salary. This is the pact, I have no problem increasing the salary of the civil service if it is downsized to an appropriate level that the govt can afford and if there is a commensurate increase in efficiency and productivity. Of course this will never happen which is why this country is facing a very real fiscal crisis in the near future. We need legislation that mandates a balanced budget. Every dollar of these increases will be borrowed adding further misery on the heads of already suffering taxpayers.
This is so true, they FNM has disappointed in many ways: where is the FOIA, there is no promised travel expenses accounting, BPL is a mess, and the list goes on. But the alternative, the PLP is far worse, the same corrupt dinosaurs, who of us have ever called someone and asked them if they had any “ shingles” for us?😜 They may have blundered these corruption cases but we all know how the former govt operated, and w the same faces who would expect anything different from them. So we have the choice of the bad (FNM) or the terrible (PLP).
