This is hearbreaking really. Even though most Bahamians did not support the size of the project - no large hotel has ever seemed to be successful in this country - once it was progressing we definitely wanted it to happen. So many friends/family members left career opportunities abroad to come home to Baha Mar, many excellent employees were recruited from Atlantis, Ocean Club and other properties so that Baha Mar would have the best of the best. My heart goes out to my fellow Bahamians who are now between a rock and a hard place. There are no new jobs out there for them.

But what I find disappointing and frustrating is the $20million in unpaid BEC bills, per this excerpt from Bloomberg's story on the bankruptcy filing:

"The company is seeking court approval of as much as $80 million in financing arranged by Izmirlian that will enable Baha Mar to operate during the Chapter 11 process, according to the statement. The company said it plans to use $30 million of that for operations over the next 30 days.
Among the largest unsecured creditors listed were CCA Bahamas Ltd., owed $72.6 million in construction costs; Bahamas Electricity Corp., owed $19.5 million; and Yates-Osprey J.V. owed $5.28 million. All are based in Nassau. Bally Technologies of Las Vegas is owed more than $1 million in trade debt, according to the filing."

Our successive govts continue to allow the big players to get away with non-payment of these large bills. We simply cannot afford to run our country this way.

interesting article - interesting that she neglects to add (and the writer did not do enough research on this) that she generally only recommends 2nd photographers and videographers out of the United States. She does not play well with Bahamian talent. I

it's important to keep in mind that many of these leaks were in place for a long time before Rubis came in to the Bahamas. Which means the govt - again - was negligent in putting safety measures in place. All stations should be checked regularly. The issue at Sandyport is a leak that was there some time ago apparently and was resolved (apparently) but proper remediation was never done it seems. The fuel was left to sit and now that work has been going on at that site, it has disturbed the ground (which is essentially landfill as it was a marsh before -and should never have underground fuel tanks by my humble opinion) and now the fuel that accumulated is leaking. I see this as a developer (Buckner) issue, not Rubis. If you look under the dock near the fuel pumps you can see clearly where the cement bags used as fill/support are bulging out severely.

I think we can all acknowledge that crime is a reflection on a society. The police cannot single handedly combat crime - their must be community support and accountability. However, I think the reason the PLP are getting slammed is because they ran a campaign with crime as a fundamental issue. The plastered posters all over downtown Nassau - in the public/tourist eye - highlighting the number of murders under the FNM. And blamed them thoroughly. Now the situation continues to worsen - the PLP has zero handle on the level of murders. Someone suggested there may be a vigilante out there - killing the men who are released on bail. I don't have a problem with that. But the PLP must acknowledge that the crime is not purely a responsibility of one party. That is where they ultimately messed up, in my humble opinion.

William Wong needs to be quiet. He was the most useless BREA president that I can think of. Is he trying to say that George Smith could not afford the $700 for his license? If that's the case then he shouldn't be in real estate in the first place. Pretty pathetic - the both of them.

i have found the court documents online and, chucky, you are wrong. the names are not indicated. they simply refer to Consultant I and Official 8. What boggles my mind is what Maynard -Gibson is even investigating..... It is all clearly laid out in the US court documents so the fact that this is being covered up here is absolutely pathetic.

when i drove by at 10am there were around 15 protestors. i really hope that a lot more were present earlier in the morning otherwise that speaks again to the sad passivity / submissiveness of the Bahamian people.
