Airbnb has had a huge impact in the affordable tourist market. Even though most don't rent $$250- rooms, they do spend quite a lot at restaurants and stores. They have a double sided review system. The person staying with you reviews your place and in turn, you review them. Also, the people coming to stay have to provide government ID to Airbnb before they can book. We've only been using Airbnb in Florida for 3 years now with great satisfaction. It's a much more people friendly "local flavour" experience.
Buying the hotel is part of the greater plan for turning Freeport into the Silicon Valley of the Caribbean. The closed casino can become a cryptocurrency technology centre. http://www.tribune242.com/news/2018/jun…
Maybe the focus should be on Nassau since it's always $200- cheaper to fly there. I can remember when Freeport was an interesting and almost exciting place. Let us all hope something happens soon. That is besides VAT going to 15%.
The Grand Lucayan is just another needed domino in order to make Freeport the New Silicon Valley of the Caribbean as was announced in June 2018. http://www.tribune242.com/news/2018/jun…
We can't get the Post Office to function, electricity in our Capital hangs by a thread, we're deep in debt, the Grand Lucayan never turned a profit. This will end up as a cow for someone to milk. Unfortunately, letting it close is the best choice among a group of awful options.
If you don't want to see that, then help Hutchinson keep Lighthouse Point open. We're going to flush a bunch of money down the drain no matter what. BUT, Government ownership of anything just turns it into a slush fund.
If no private company will pay 65 million, then it isn't worth 65 million. Last week, I walked the beach in front of the hotel. It was a fabulous property - I'm so sad!
The Freeport Bahamas "Brand" is one of poor service, very expensive & atrocious airfares.
My children in Toronto can go "all inclusive" to Cuba and Mexico for less than the cost of the flight from Toronto to Freeport. The $555- (Canadian) Sunwing flight isn't over the top expensive but, you have to fit their Saturday to Saturday schedule.
I know much of the nations debt is in U.S Dollars but our Dollar needs to be no higher than 70-cents U.S. to make us the least bit competitive. Nassau hotels seem to be doing OK but part of that is because a lot of resort inventory in the Caribbean suffered extreme hurricane damage.
