Things will take care of themselves. Look at how the financial industry in the Bahamas is shrinking, sales of real estate is shrinking. This is all driven by foreign money - or not. We are the frogs in the pan not realizing that the water will boil soon.

This has nothing to do with how we feel about the report. Of course it is political. However it will impact how foreign investors perceive the investment climate in the Bahamas. Perception is reality, this Government can not be trusted with information, it literally nationalizes assets from private investors, it is prone to corruption, labor cost is high, skilled labor scarce, unions all over the place, import duties, cost of living for foreign key personnel is high, immigration and work permit issues, volatile political environment, currency exchange restrictions. what else you need to know as an investor?

we value your op-onion and op-bananas, too, Birdie.

1. Enforcement of Disclosure of financial interests by key members of the Executive, Judiciary and Legislative Branch supervised by an independent body that reflects the broadest interest groups in the Bahamas (e.g. partially elected - in off election cycles, partially appointed by outgoing government for duration of an election cycle, partially appointed by interest groups such as Chamber of commerce, BREA, Bahamas Bar, etc.). Enforcement mechanism: e.g. MPs that don't disclose lose their vote in HOA until disclosed.
2. Election of AG by general population, in a process that does not coincide with the general election for the HOA. AG not member of Government, has no political role.
3. Corruption Ombudsman. independent from executive branch, independently appointed (maybe by a panel of judges), person of contact for low level, daily corruption.
4. Corruption Court - special court dealing with mid to high level corruption.
5. above 3 and 4 needs to be separated from AG's office.
6. System of sanctions that financially hurt perpetrators, e.g. reduction in pension, loss of annual bonus, fines, loss of access to government contracts, jail time, public shaming (e.g. publishing names in newspapers)
7. System for members of the general population to anonymously report government corruption. No requirement to be named as witnesses for whistleblowers etc.

well yes and no, as it potentially also paves the way for charges under the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, given the whole Bacon/Nygard mess

shut the streets down, open restaurants, bars, new movie. I am ok to give them a break, if they are willing to pay higher taxes on their revenue, once back up.

GrassRoot says...

you are a loser. you should have invested into BOB and Clico and anything that gets touched by the Government. Then you get bailed out.

GrassRoot says...

"It is all a big fat lie, not true, we have things under control and to prove this, the Government will endeavor to bring in the IRS, the FBI, the CIA, to thoroughly investigate the allegations made to ensure that the integrity of the Bahamian government and judiciary will be reinstated and all in that report dismantled as an initiative by people trying to destabilize the Bahamian government." - Messrs. Mitchel and Fitzgerald, something like that?

but don't dare to bring brownies, you may well get arrested and declared a security threat for the country.

On $7m budget for Carnival

The Carnival in the Bahamas is another sign of our D-Level politicians. I think the Bahamian Carnival is the only Carnival on the plant that takes place after Easter. Carnival almost everywhere on the planet (from Peru to Aruba, to Italy to Brazil) is a pre-lent event and rooted in the Catholic Christian faith. So the idea of Carnival in the Bahamas in April, is like Christmas in June (explain that to your kids) and a simple brain fart - totally detached from any cultural or religious base. You may as well introduce Halloween to the man in the moon. Now why in the world no one came up with a concept like the Pirate Festival or something like that, with the history of Pirates being part of the Bahamian DNA, is beyond me. For the slow brains: Its like Mardi Gras in a Pirates Costume. Something like that will draw international crowds. Declare Bahamas the Nation of Pirates again for three days a year. Go nuts, go crazy, create a brand, sell rum, beer, flags, dance, sing, make babies. Woodstock for Pirates and would-be-Pirates.
