With this mindset- you are asking for more of the same- or Toggie and Bobo. We have heard of them- and they have shown themselves to have some skills, but that doesn't mean we should vote for them. Since they are putting themselves forward- ask questions of them and insist that they debate each other and make a call. I know nothing about the financial services guy nor Greenslade, but I do have some questions- How did Greenslade get the police contract because he shares the same name as the police commissioner and it looks a bit suspicious? And more important- why doesn't the system work? Or is that just a terrible rumor? How might he explain stories of men in ankle bracelets boarding planes to Canada? If he can't explain- then why should I vote for him? Bran- are you seeing this from where Bahamians are sitting- dude already has too much to explain- in my opinion- but since he has declared- he should explain early and get it out of the way.
How many reports do we need to tell us this? Wasn't a sweeping one done when Mitchell was in charge of the public service? Wasn't another done aimed at finance reform completely when HAI was prime minister? No one has acted. Not ONE! Permanent Secretaries sway according to the government they serve. They have very little power to stand and most are between a rock and hard place- unions on one side and politicians on the other. As currently configured, it is not a position for individuals with vision. It is not a leadership position in the truest sense where they go in an run a ministry with goals for education say, hiring teachers etc- if it is the ministry of education. The language in their title speak volumes- Permanent Secretaries- The administer but they do not RUN ministries. Unfortunately ministers do- who often know jack.
I am sick of downtown property owners looking for a break- Fix the place up, lower your damn rents. If you aren't doing anything with your property - SELL- Give someone else a try. Bay Street is the way it is because property owners turned their backs on the Bahamian consumer and entrepreneurs who got killed by those rents. They turned to the non-spending cruise ship passengers and lacking variety, reason or parking to come to Bay, Bahamians found other places to shop. Property owners did not respond, did not remain competitive- Hence the dead zone. Perhaps property owners should invest in commercial, housing developments downtown. Maybe a grocery store? Give people a reason to be down there. This has nothing to do with globalisation and all about a failure to understand who your sustained audience will be and and respond effectively.
why bother to get these rights vis a vis some other means as you say, when we can enshrine those rights in the constitution? I guess I am not average because I will be voting yes, si and oui! .
All important points- but don't think for a moment that Minnis is listening. His desire for yes men and women regardless of their baggage, does not bode well. It is not the kind of leadership required to get this country out of the quicksand our corrupt and selfish political class has placed us in.
Though this was a disappointing loss, my admiration and respect for Mr. Hield and his family is tremendous. I thought I came from humble conditions- this fella almost makes my childhood look like a fairytale- almost. To come from 8 Mile rock- a place that seems like its behind God's back and with the work, discipline, desire and prayers to become the one of best of his age is truly exemplary He isn't huge physically but his work ethic is incredible and he graduated from college. And he WANTS to rep the Bahamas- the 242-? The Ministry of Education should have the dude on speed dial. There are a lot of negatives in this country, but I choose to focus on the positives and Mr. Hield is one of them. The young mathematician that just became the priest at Howard University is another example. The young boy who just won the carifta chess champion, The Bahamian architect Perpall, who designed Duke University's athletic facility, the President of Middle Tennessee State, on and on. People from this tiny place go on to impact the world - all day every day. Lets think about that for a minute- away from the regularly scheduled negative programming.
