I agree 100% with this letter. Poor Bahamians are poor Bahamians whether they are black, white or whatever colour. The world has moved on but clearly Perry Gomez is stuck in the dark ages.
There is a better way but it requires the country to identify and enlist leaders who love their country more than they love their bank balance and the trappings of power. Honesty and Transparency is what The Bahamas needs in government. Unfortunately, we have neither.
NHI is NOT about improving Health Care in this country.
NHI is about a) creating more large government contracts where a small amount of well connected vested interests can profit and b) the PLP trying to desperately to boost its election prospects by offering something to the masses for free.
The implementation of NHI will further discourage the shrinking working class by burdening hard working Bahamians with another unnecessary tax. It WILL cause the credit rating agencies to downgrade Bahamas still further once it is clear that the country really can't afford the scheme at this time.
We should look to introduce a National Lottery the proceeds from which should be used entirely to improve National Health care in this country. But let's have NO MORE taxation on the hard working and honest working class and NO MORE politicians getting rich through hidden side deals at the expense of the public purse. And finally NO MORE administrations that will do and say anything just to stay in power.
Why do we have to copy other cultures? Why don't we concentrate on what WE do best i.e. Junkanoo! We should be trying to make the Year-end Junkanoo experience the best it can be for participants and paying customers. The last two parades fell well short of excellent. We don't need to spend $9 million dollars to bring foreign entertainers into Nassau - it will do nothing to promote Junkanoo or Bahamian culture. The whole concept is totally misguided.
“And so we had proposed a 5.4 per cent tax on salary and it is up to the team that is in place to come up with what we are going to propose this time that has not been determined.”
Well it better not be anything like a 5.4 per cent tax on salaries otherwise the people will revolt! Why doesn't this government get it? I would like a new Porsche but I can't afford it and so I will stick with what I have for now. A fully comprehensive NHI scheme would be great, for sure, but the working class (who are going to have to pay for it) simply can't afford it at this time. Rollins is on the right track when he says that a National Lottery should be used to fund NHI. That would be much more sensible. A Tax on payroll at this time will be the death knell for this economy but the PLP is too stupid to understand that.
How can a "supposedly" intelligent 'financial" man like Ryan Pinder honestly come out with the nonsense that this country can afford a National Health Scheme at this time??? Has he completely lost the plot? NHI is something The Bahamas should aspire to in a form and at a time that makes sense for the country. It would be the death knell for the economy if the PLP were to tax the working class on top of VAT in order to fund an NHI scheme in 2016. I agree with Rollins that NHI should be funded by a National Lottery. The PLP will of course continue to dangle the NHI carrot right up to election time in a pathetic effort to persuade the gullible that this is something they can deliver on.
