I really don't understand how the director of NEMA could say on ZNS yesterday that he was happy with the results. Since when do people perform a test by scaring the hell out of the general public, resulting in mass hysteria, and endangering people's lives, job, and the general business of the day?
Perhaps it would have been sensible to say "we are simulating a tsunami warning, if a tsunami was coming think about what you do, and where you would go within the next 2 hours" don't send people out into the streets saying there's a tsunami coming and watch out. I'm really surprised someone didn't die in a traffic accident, or that no mini-riots started downtown and other places.
And yes people with the technology could have researched online for earthquakes in the region but this news seemed to spread throughout the entire Bahamas, think about the people on the out islands that were told by officials that a tsunami was coming and that was only information source they had.
Without any official word from the hospital are we sure this is infact vibrio vulnificus? Vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain and inflammation of the skin can be symptoms of a myriad of diseases including ciguatera poisoning.
Valuable information to the public would be what this man had eaten, or where he swam in Andros and if there is poor plumbing and stagnant water in the area.
I am sorry for the gentleman, but at the same time I think we need to get some concrete info here before everyone goes into a mass panic.
Come on now guys, I would have thought you'd know better. The big picture with the mate holding the bill is a sailfish, and the small picture on the boat is a Blue Marlin.
I'm not discounting the catch, even though the size is hard to determine, but wow 2 completely different fish pictured for the same story, and trying to pass it off as the same fish. Maybe contact some local charter fishermen (only Bahamians legal to charter fish here) if you want fish stories and valid pictures...
I don't understand how our Government can be OK with the oil "going out to sea," and almost seem to dismiss the oil spill since the oil is not washing on our beaches. The Deep Water Horizon BP Oil Spill in the Gulf of Mexico took place 41 miles south of Lousiana.
That was 41 miles off the coast, this spill was only 10-14 miles off our coast. To add to that, Palm Beach Florida is only 86 miles away from Freeport Harbour. Where does the Government think that oil is going? Steering currents would be the Gulf Stream, which carry debris AND nutrients necessary for oceanic life throughout the Atlantic Ocean.
If we're lucky perhaps no one else will see the oil, and perhaps it will eventually sink in the deep ocean waters, but is it really right to simply dismiss the oil once it doesn't wash our way? We need to get real before something really scary happens.
I feel like the Bahamas as an independent country has been both extremely lucky, and extermely naive. And I'm not so sure we would be able to handle the disasters that others have been going through lately such as:
- The BP Oil Spill - Hurricane Katrina - Hurricane Sandy - The Nuclear Disaster in Japan after Earthquakes - Chemical release - whether accidental or through acts of terrorism.
Wow, so just so happens that I turn on Channel 10 to get the morning news...you know to find out what's going on in the world and all I get is black, along with CBS, and NBC. Overly dramatic Fox is working but suprisingly all 3 of the Networks listed above are blacked out. I can only hope this is a wierd coincidence and not that the powers that be were brave enough to black out 3 networks from now until the Olympics are completed. This ain't like an episode of Survivor you know, we only get Summer Olympics every 4 years...
