This time last year, the Country was under full lockdown. Residents were allowed to go to the food stores, gas stations, banks and pharmacies. Everything else was closed. In fact this was the week when the competent authority allowed home furnishings stores to open two or three days a week for a few hours. They later adjusted the description to say ‘plumbing stores, hardware stores and building supplies.’ So some stores who could open under the previous emergency orders could not open under the revised orders. And today 1 year later, the Covid-19 cases continue to escalate. Definitely much more than they were this time last year. The country remains wide open. Much to the pleasure of many. A balancing act between Covid safety and economics. The country is ailing and could barely survive lockdowns or increased curfews. So the trade off is additional Covid -19 cases and possibly deaths.
I used my card locally a few times to find out local businesses were charging in US $ instead of Bahamian currency. So as the customer you pay conversion fees etc. And as the funds go on to their US $ account they avoid paying these fees when they use the funds internationally. A few cents or dollars here and there certainly adds up
Should the prime minister also known as the competent authority be arrested and charged with breeches of the emergency protocols? Endangering lives even? Should he be fined $2,000 for calling an assembly in a place known to be infected with Covid-19 or, at least someone in that space to have the virus? Should he be further charged $300 for everyone that attended the assembly yesterday? Especially after failing to have the chamber’s properly cleaned.
The forgoing must be a paid, political broadcast. First off, the US doesn’t have 60 million vaccines it doesn’t need! It has 60 million of the AstraGenica vaccines that it could not get approval to use on American citizens. These vaccines have a limited shelf life, so rather than allowing them to expire and become useless, the US has decided to give them away. To countries that are more hungry for vaccines and has less stringent restrictions (Bahamas). Secondly the US itself has hit a brick wall with its own mass vaccinations efforts. Many Americans have decided they don’t want the vaccines or some don’t want the second dose. So many of the vaccinations sites across America are inactive or even closing. And, like our government, the US government is trying to offer rewards and inducements to persons who take the vaccines. Like not having to wear masks in certain environments or being able to travel without Covid tests. Or indoor dining. Wow a big one! But no, no thanks! Apparently the people who want to do indoor dining or travel unrestricted or go mask less have already taken their vaccinations. Both shots where required. The rest of the population ain’t budging. ‘No thank you, but no thanks!’ Maybe the script about the vaccines has too many holes in it (so don’t put no hole in my arm, at least not just right now’. Now what exactly does these vaccines do again?
Well the vaccination extravaganza is a flunk. It is failing miserably. Worldwide. They tried to use the fear factor. The increasing numbers. The crisis in India. But India created most of its own problems. Political gatherings (Remember Donald Trump’s ‘no masks’ rally’s? Then there were the national celebrations that drew thousands. And the poor medical system. In this country the infections rate is increasing, yes, but thankfully the hospitalizations and death rates are not increasing at the same rate. Many Bahamians have built up an immunity to the virus and at this point the emergency powers should not be pushing a vaccine as its major priority BUT a continuing of the safety measures. It is almost hypocritical for the PM to come in a public arena and tell Bahamians ‘if you take the vaccine, you can travel into our country and throughout our country without a Covid test and also not wear a mask in certain conditions.’ After the sacrifices the Bahamian people have already made. After he begged them as the competent authority to ‘just give him a little more time’. Who’s agenda if Minnis pushing with these vaccines. But it’s a fake and failing agenda. And those people who are planning these huge events. Not a dollar they are fined for their reckless behavior, and the idiots that follow them is too much! Three or four hundred idiots that go and party must return to 400 households. After not practicing social distancing or wearing masks. They must also go to work the next day or even attend classes. Too bad you wasn’t partying with the devil alone. But you must invite him into your home, your workplace or your classroom.
Despite it all, Moultrie is making history. Cutting his own path, so to speak. Both political parties and voters are being forced to take a second look.
Rather than giving his staff a tongue lashing, and publicly so, Roberts needs to soon have a rewards ceremony and recognize those who have manned the guns in his business over the last year and help bring this country through one of the most trying times ever. They heeded the call and answered the bell, and whilst it may not have been about profit, many took the risk for Roberts and Super Value and for the people of The Bahamas and provided an essential service all at their own personal risk. The biggest problem

Seen at least a dozen mistakes in The Tribune today, including using $100 Million interchangeably with $1 Billion. Corona fatigue maybe?
