In the video some of the young boys dropped to the floor after receiving just one stroke of the ‘cane.’ Others ran off only to be brought back to the persons administering the punishment for additional strokes of the cane. The ‘administrator’ seem to grow more infuriated when the children broke away and used more force on them when they were brought back. Biblical guidelines state that punishment should not be administered by someone who is angry. The ‘administrator’ who is fairly large in size also seems to tire towards the end of the video so the last boys appeared to get less caning than the first ones and with less force.
And let us not forget the police beatings where 4 out of every 5 victims may be innocent and the instances where women were beaten ‘like men’, by policemen.
Most of the adults in this country grew up in eras behemoth mass caning was common place both at school and in the home. Those days when one expected a beating/whipping and would put on extra layers of clothing or go by other family to avoid it, only to find it would be there waiting when you return and even doubled. Some children would even run away and hide by friends and others would threaten to do so. And anyone who has been in custody of a few boys know the difficulty of remaining in charge or maintaining control without having to administer corporal punishment if only a tap across the knuckles with a ruler. So what has changed? Has the advent of the ‘living color era’ made the population more sensitive to these beatings or have persons became more aware and sensitive to the horror of these beatings? The thing is what did these children do to deserve mass corporal punishment and how effective was it in curbing the behavior? Do guidelines need to be put in place for the administration of such punishment or should it be totally prohibited?
Obviously this is one of the least educated and least sensitive commissioners the country has seen in a very long time. Maybe his education does not extend beyond high school and police training. Firstly Mr Jack says curfews and lockdowns are not responsible fir reduction in crime. Yet some 4.000 persons were cited for curfew violations. That’s like saying curfews and lockdowns are not effective in preventing the spread of coy virus. That is like saying sending a person to prison is not effective in reducing crime. But the commissioner will also make statements like, ‘There were a number of break-ins in the South Western part of the island. My officers were able to crack a gang and arrest a number of persons. And that resulted in those crimes no longer occurring.” And his comments about suicide being carried out by weak men is totally insensitive and ignorant. Do you know that every single human on earth has the potential to vomit suicide? Suicide is not always the instance where someone is heartbroken or feels they are a failure, so they write a note apologizing and take their lives. Suicide is also a disorder or a disease where someone can be under const attack or bombardment to take their life. They have dreams about it and even during their happiest moments they get thoughts of ending their life. And if they eventually do it, it’s not because they couldn’t cope with life, but could no longer fight the torment of being told to end their life. The commissioner should talk to the experts and get informed before going public and making looo, insensitive and erroneous statements. And as fir murders, if the lockdowns and curfews were not responsible for part of the reduction, at least, how is it that murders increased as lockdowns and curfews were reduced? What Roll should really be telling the Bahamian people, rather than trying to blow his own horn, is rather than continuing to spend millions and millions on technology that may be effective, but the police force may not be able to maintain, the police force will look at the impact curfews and lockdowns had on crime. And they will see how best these mechanisms can be adapted and used by the police in combatting crime, murders especially,in hot spots
For the most part, the Bahamian electorate is wiser, more educated and understands more the impact of their vote, not just locally but outside the borders of the country. The Minnis administration had to walk a tightrope since it won at the polls some four years ago. And the road ahead is still unclear a d full of challenges. The resounding victory of the FNM at the polls was indication that the people had had enough of the PLP, their corruption, their favoritism and their failures and incompetence as a government. The wounds and pains of the PLP are still being felt. The people are not ready to return bro the torture of the PLP, ask them. And whilst the DNA, led by Komolafe May appear as the greener grass over the fence, can the country take such a gamble in such a time as this? Do you want an untested captain andt rookie crew in the middle of deep and treacherous waters when the ship is already battered and torn, but the crew is tested and willing to press on?
Jor Biden has issued a ‘One Hundred Day Challenge.’ Not just to vaccinate as many Americans as possible, but to get everyone to wear a mask. The challenge will also involve the discouraging of large gatherings, social distancing and frequent hand washing and sanitizer. With the US having about 1/3 of the COVID-19 cases and deaths, the world cannot recover until that country (USA) brings its cases under control.
So is the country headed in the direction of approvals having to be sought before goods can be imported? Will food, oil/gas and medicine be given priority over other imports? Will bans be put on importing products that are available locally? And will there also be travel restrictions?
The impact will be more significant considering most people are months behind on loans, mortgages, car notes and rent, due to the economic impact of the Covid-18 pandemic. And, of course, the financial situation for many will deteriorate even more before it gets better. So banks and other financial institutions have to exercise discretion in the short and intermediate terms. But a credit bereau is long overdue and information also be useful to landlords.

When you run your car without ooil or low on it, the engine will eventually burn up. So will the earth!
