The fact is now matter how one slices the economic pie, business will not be as usual. At least for some time. And even as the virus cases have flattened in this country, and begins to taper off worldwide (some countries like the US are still in a surge), it will be months befor the final economic toll of this pandemic is seen and/or felt. Many smaller businesses, for example, will try and struggle thru the holiday season hoping to find a tail wind that can push them forward towards safer territory. And whilst the government may need to search out other sources of revenue, which may include some forms of taxation, it must now ever attempt to increase the tax burden on businesses and individuals that have suffered the pandemic. They, too, need a grace period for recovery and if they are taxed out of existence, that it makes the government’s recovery efforts even more difficult. In economics there is a term called ‘satisficing’. Where you make a sacrifice for the good of the economy and become satisfied with the results.
The number of Corona cases and deaths worldwide are starting to taper off for the first time since June and will most likely start a downward spiral, indicating a reduction in the number of new cases and also corona related deaths. Signifying the ending of the third ( and probably final) wave of the virus. Is this the reason for the mad, madder rush to distribute to he vaccines? Will these vaccines become obsolete and useless by early next year or will the authorities continue to distribute the vaccine and claiming it is responsible for the reduction and eventual disappearance of the covid-19 virus?
The Turnquest saga is like the Minnis Administration already trying to limp home on two flat tires, then catching a third flat. Now erryone is singing the ‘call a early election’ song. If they only know.
Can The Bahamas afford the new surge of Corona that is happening in America? One Hundred and Fifty persons are infected every minute. And the numbers are expected to increase after thanksgiving celebrations and shopping. And Bahamians are caught up in the mix.
Yes Minnis is doing the right thing. The pandemic has to be managed to the end and the emergency orders must continue, at least until March. And the 9:00 curfews should continue for non essential workers and non employed people at least until December 31st. Just look at the number of murders that are happening since the curfew has been extended and weekend lockdowns have been lifted. And Ine will be shocked with the number of robberies that are occurring daily, especially non New Providence. Imagine holiday shopping where it is normal bf or persons to walk into a business establishment masked.
One can say without fear of contradiction that it is highly unlikely that there will be any additional lockdowns of Nee Providence or any of the Family islands befor the Christmas holidays. Some really drastic must happen to cause the corona numbers to shoot up drastically to require a lockdown. However the two activities that need close attention and monitoring is the return of Bahamians to parts of the Corona infested United Stares, especially after wild and reckless shopping sprees. And, of course, the second action is the return of tourists to this country. Checking adjusting and readjusting the travel requirements to keep the country safe and to keep the tourists who visit also safe and virus free.
