That is why government must not only look at infections but recoveries and cases of demise. If the normal population has the ability to resist the virus and recover from it then the decision will have to be made to allow them to return to some sense of normalcy and earn s living. And only put heavy restrictions on high risk persons, while keeping the boarders closely guarded. Else the financial devastation will be more deadly than the virus. There was no need to implement lockdown on small sparsely populations in the Family Islands. And who are the idiots who decided to arrest, lockup, charge and fine homeless persons rather than taking them to shelters. All under the pretense that the effort is to save lives! Police must also be reminded that persons have rights to go out for food and medicine. So if they on the street going to Social Services for food vouchers it going to a public clinic they should not be harassed by the police and told to return home.
Was it necessary to extend the lockdown to the smaller and far flung islands of the Bahamas? Most of these islands have small and sparse communities where they are already socially distanced and since mailboats are prohibited from carrying passengers, they are virtually closed communities. As for the small businesses nationwide, yes they are under great strain. Many have hardly been making ends meet before this crisis and when they do reopen the entire tourism sector will still be gone.
America’s biggest problem is they have a president who wants to ignore the medical experts and rush to reopen the country. Medical doctors are at the helm of this country’s leadership and understand the consequences of making this grave mistake. They also have the forth of getting advice from China who is now reopening their country.
At least two of the newly infected worked in a public space where they were exposed to others. The infection rate among populations can be as high 80 percent with as much as 30 percent becoming seriously ill. This far this hasn’t been the case among the Bahamian population. Unlike New York who’s cases grow exponentially. In fact they expect they will need 1 million ventilators and many more hospital beds than they can locate.
The thing is, some businesses have their revenue insured so the long closures will not bother them, and hopefully their staff will benefit from the insurance coverage. And then there are those businesses that were wiped out or suffered tremendously during Hurricane Dorian. The truth is some may be wiped out. And when the country starts to reopen remember the large tourist sector will be mostly idle since most of the markets are still under Corona pandemic. Just hope the hurricane season is not too active.
Major cities in the US are being hit hard by Corona. Some cases are doubling overnight, like in New York and California. Donal Trump has deployed the National Guard in four states. So the empty hotels and huge unemployment may be the best case scenario right now.
Many essential workers cannot get to work. The schedule should have been adjusted from 5 am to 6 pm. Social distancing enforced a/c off and all windows open
If no additional cases confirmed, will it be necessary to keep entire country on partial lockdown beyond say Wednesday, even if retail businesses go to a shorter operating schedule. With the tourist sector almost totally disrupted can the country afford to dig a deeper economic ditch. National Insurance claims they can pay workers for the 10 days but can they?
