Everyone is waiting the sentencing of this Larry Nassar, the sports doctor in the USA who was charged with sexually assaulting hundreds of young women, some hundreds of times when he was suppose to be treating them. And also the married couple who kept their children locked and chained like dogs in a filthy, emaciated home. Some of the children were off age but to afraid to leav their parents prison. One psychologist who gave evidence in the Nassar trial said, when explaining why these young women, some still girls, refused to report Nassar or to break ties with him after they were being molested gave this explanation: These ( young women) are like gold fish. You tap on the glass (of their fish tank) and they swim away, afraid, but they come back a few seconds later because they are curious. Over 150 women being assaulted. some hundreds of times by this trained sports doctor...but our fish fry is not safe...and the jet ski operators, young and virile men are sub humans..wow
This is a 2 edged sword for sure, but as the present market exists, the high tariffs are stagnating the clothing (and shoes) retail sector. The high cost of carrying inventory for example (high freight plus customs duty and VAT) in a limited market. Clothing and shoes become obsolete almost overnight so they require a high mark up and a quick sale. Then too, how does the market eliminate the perception held by many that the prices in the Bahamas will always be higher and the clothing not the latest fashion. The trend now as opposed to shopping at home is persons take the family on vacation, do all their shopping abroad and declare exemption on the things they didn't wear before they return home. Then there's Amazon. very expensive but its the new trend to shop on line.
At least two of the murders on Grand Bahama and the discovery of two bodies in Abaco may eventually be linked to the gang/drug/turf warfare that is going on in New Providence. As former gang members and drug dealers flee the capital in fear of their lives, their violent and criminal past seems to be following them. The police must now ensure that these gang wars do not destroy the peaceful and tranquil lifestyles on the Family Islands. Also to keep in check the lull on New Providence caused by gang members, fleeing, hiding or being killed.
It would be interesting to see what happens with Trumps immigration plans as the unemployment numbers in the Us continue to shrivel. Amazon is in the process of purchasing Target and adding food to the its stock items. It also has added low priced items to its free shipping list and expects to hire 30,000 new employees. It is also looking to open its second headquarters that will also require additional workers. Ford is in the process of refurbishing several of its plants in the US and will resume the manufacture of the Ford Ranger truck. New vehicles are expected to roll off the assembly line as early as December of this year. Also Apple is in the process of taking $250 Billion that it held overseas back to the US after Trump's tax cuts reduced the amount of taxes they will have to pay by over $40 billion. Apple plans to invest $350 billion in the US over the next 5 years. Then Walmart gave each of its 1/2 million employees a $1,000 bonus in addition to pay raises. It is exploring the possibility of expanding its online business to compete with Amazon that is not getting into brick and mortar stores. So where will the workers come from. America will be experiencing a shortage of workers at least by June of this year. If all the illegals are deported before they are replaced by legitimate workers, there will be a severe worker shortage. This will drive up the cost of labor and this can eat up the benefits of Trump's tax cuts. This will then lead to inflation.
And don’t forget tha fast food franchises and the now popular Chinese liquor stores that seem to be operating anywhere and everywhere. The web shops should have been regulated from they were licensed. There are laws on the books that prevent the granting of licenses to stores operating within a certain distance of each other. And there was a moritorium on liquor stores in certain areas so that a license could only be granted if an existing store closed.
Most of the plane crashes that resulted in the loss of life over the past five years in The Bahamas were foreign pilots who became disorientated and/or experienced mechanical problems. Today's disaster should not be tied in with issues you have with the Fish fry or issues you have with gaming being regulated. But never mind, you have issues with Bahamians period.
In the main time how will Donald Trump's immigration laws affect Bahamians living in the US? There are reports that persons who have lived in the States for over 30 years are being deported, some having to leave their wives and family behind. They never took the time time to regularize their status in that country. Some went over as children and others went on student visas or tourist visas and just stayed. The cultural shock of having to return to the Bahamas and the possibility of not being able to return to the US, even to visit.
