Surprisingly there is a lot of construction activity on a number of the Family. I stands including Eleuthera, Exuma and The Abacos. A number of foreign investors are building rental units and retiring Bahamians are moving to the Family Islands to escape the hustle and bustle of New Providence.
This appears to be a move in the right direction even though one must be mindful of the time the survey was done. Just weeks before a general election. But yes more people are working and as this trickles through the economy hopefully it will generate more business activity. RIP Rupert Roberts founder and President of Super Value.
Grodtial you are misinformed. Some people think every Black person is subhuman. They want to deny our young men the opportunity to earn an honest living and you are just as bad for promoting their agenda. Y'all ain't taking this country from us!
Get bahamians to work! Unemployment is the reason for lots of the crime. Then there needs to be more institutional structure after leaving high school. Many young people, males especially, leave school at the ages of 16 or 17 and there is no formal structure after that if they don't go on to college. Many try to find jobs and whatever resemblance they have of a family expect them to become independent and carry their own load. Even in the US now offspring are opting to stay in their parents abode longer, even a few years after getting married. The financial world is not easy and working children that stay at home even help the parents. Here in the Bahamas there has to be some institution for persons under 21 who are not employed or in college. Else the big greedy arms of crime will continue to grab them and for many it will become a way of life. And for others and some industries, like Tourism, crime will destroy them eventually.
"*In March, Ms Hill expressed optimism that the company will be able to meet generation demands heading into the summer peak season. At the time, Ms Hill said she felt “very good about the level of work that our employees have conducted and our ability to be ready for the summer.”*
I don't think the outages are as bad as last year. We were experiencing 5 and 6 outages a day last year and could not use our computers at the offices. This year it averages 2-3 a week. What really needs to happen is BPL needs to started installing upgraded and more efficient equipment. That is when the country will really see more reliable power generation and a cleaner more affordable product. Most other prices are driven by the cost of electricity and once electricity comes down, most other prices will follow.
Next to reducing the national debt and putting a harness on government spending, the new government must move swiftly to reduce the cost of living and the tax burden on the ordinary citizens. Since the introduction of VAT many businesses have lost their ability to turn a profit and many have responded by increasing prices. But since there is no real growth in the economy, increased prices only means that more of the same money has less purchasing power and consumers are getting less value for their dollar. If fact food prices on some family islands are less than in New Providence and Freeport because the stores are family run and operated and so the labor costs can be kept down. The cost of living in New Providence And Grand Bahama is in bearable.
@Tal : Well obviously he did not have the power and influence over Minnis he thought he had. Which is a good thing. But the man has $900 million on the line to be lost. And if Minnis, as prime minister can use his influence, legally, to help him then why not. And there should never be another Bah Mar built on the island of New Providence for at least 20 years.
It's the economy stupid! Who said that? But in fact when times are hard parents/guardians ten to see children as a liability rather an asset or even a blessing. And so the attitude is 'I can hardly take care of myself and I also have to take care of you u'. Then there's the neglect because parents are busy chasing the money. Then there are trusted friends and family members who take advantage of the situation. It is especially common for children to be abused by live in boyfriends or visiting uncles.
