Many Bahamian businesses are like hamsters on a treadmill under the current government. They chasing profits that all now so elusive. First there were the increases in business license fees that took a big chump out of businesses that were lucky enough to be making a profit. Then the VAT came and business owners were told, "Its a pass thru item so you only need to add the 7.5% vat and not increase your prices. But after some 15 months of struggling and seeing no profit, businesses realize they have to adjust their prices upwards to cover the increases in doing business due to vat. The book keeping alone is costly and there are items on which vat credits will never be realized. The cost of carrying has increased and so there is a corresponding increase in the cost of shrinkage. Now labor costs have gone up with corresponding increases in National Insurance. Some businesses will eventual increase their prices by up to 50 % to cover the new increased costs of doing business not to mention the risk involved. Unfortunately a number of small and medium businesses will not make it through this year 2016. And government seems lost as to how to reduce the casualties.

How did the Bahamas ever get to this?

While KB is a very intelligent Bahamian and a very talented entertainer his anger towards the government seems distorted. The man is just too angry and seems to ready to hurl insults at persons who don't see things his way or share even his political views. You cannot find peace or progress in anger. Maybe he needs to tune his temper down a bit so he doesn't appear to be the offending party.

The biggest danger about this whole dump-fire situation is to persons who do not even realize that they are inhaling dump smoke. When they go to bed at night the air is 'clear' but through the night as draft settles the smoke around their homes and they inhale it all night, even if they are using air conditioners. Most of the smoke has burnt off by the time they get up for work the next day and even though they may be feeling tried and lacking energy, some do not realize they have been inhaling dump smoke all through the night while they slept. Some even develop smoker's cough, running noses or burning eyes and other symptoms associated with inhaling smoke. And these are persons as far away from the dump as Cable Beach in the West, The Grove and Bain and Grants Town and even far as Prince Charles in the East. Some pass the symptoms off as a result of 'a lil change in da weather.' Either the dump (smoke) has to be contained or the dump relocated, which (relocation) may eventually have to be done in any event.

It is not time to move on until clear and decisive decisions are made on the status of Nygard and Bacon in this country. Obviously their hate for and inability to tolerate each other has led to disruptive behavior that may even involve crime. If nothing is done to separate these two their behavior will obviously get worse and may lead to loss of life. Politics should be set aside and all heads should come together to decide how best to put an end to this behavior that is not only dividing Bahamians and setting a poor example for the young people in this country. But it is an embarrassment to other Lyford Day residents and to the country as a whole. How was the situation allowed to deteriorate to a point to where there are discussions about murderous plots and plans to topple governments? What other countries would tolerate this misbehaving.

Some Bahamians are convinced that there is some vigilante gang operating in the Bahamas and many believe it is responsible for at least half the murders in this country over the past 10 years. Some believe that police may be involved either individually or as a team. In fact one police officer who died recently told his wife some things that left her so disturbed she had to seek medical help and eventually left the country. The fact is there are too many young men being killed in this country. Too many murders are being left unsolved. And too many Bahamians are buying into the comfort when a young man is 'executed'. That he was a bad boy. That he was known to police. That he was on bail. That he was wearing an ankle bracelet. But you need to know who killed the young man. What are his credentials that make him qualify to be a grim reaper of souls? What does his criminal record look like? How many other persons has he killed in the name of justice?

BoB was a profitable institution in terms leaner than these, so the question of its viability is answered. The problem with BoB, like many things , is political interference. The cookie jar was robbed, the bank was raped, multiple times, and ravished and sodomized and the pirates have gotten away with the loot. Moving forward the bank may have to be downsized if it is to be revived. BUT mechanisms and policies need to put in place to ensure that once the bank's worthiness and success are restored, the pirates, thieves and rapists do not return and redo what they already did. Of course, like DeAguilar, many of the minor shareholders only wish the bank can return to profitabliity, if even for a short while, so they can dump their shares, at least some of them and cut their losses. This to will affect BoB as an ongoing institution.
