Let Election 2017 determine who governs this country and not an ill conceived , dangerous plot to topple that the government that involves notorious criminals and the talk of murder. How many of those high profile investigators from Scotland Yard, the FBI or wherever will lose their hard earned creditably for their involvement in this plot?
Did Louis Bacon and Fred Smith ever think that after spending some 21/2 years, spending millions of dollars and hiring the best and the brightest investigators from around the world their plot to "get Nygard" would implode and explode as it did exposing rotten apples as it did and rather than toppling the government as was the intention it shows the need to stand together to protect their own country, to strengthen democracy and to beware foreigners bearing gifts. The fallout from this will be long and far reaching and the intended victims may not be the victim after all. Some feel a certain QC should be disbarred and a certain resident no longer qualifies for that status in this Bahamas.
In the US, one strategy to control and discourage persons from running for political office is to file many lawsuits against them. These lawsuits usually cripple the candidate financially trying to defend them or make them appear unfit for office. Usually the lawsuits fall off after the person withdraws from the election. In the case of President Barak Obama he has many lawsuits pending a number of which will be withdrawn after his term in office expires. In the case of the Bahamas a high profile resident and a QC and their affiliate companies have filed an unprecedented number of lawsuits over the past few years. In fact one politician recently commented that "the only person they ain't due yet is dry ma, and that's probably because she dead."
As you know "campaign finance reform " is a term associated with US elections and while the effort to limit, record, expose and control the amount that individuals, organizations and companies can contribute to political campaigns, very little has been don over the past one hundred years to reform campaign finance in the US. The major problems are that there are so many side doors and back doors to finance campaigns putting strict and specific controls in place only opens doors to more campaign finance abuse. For example an entity like The Tribune can contribute to a political campaign without one single dollar exchanging hands. Because of the power of the pen it can either favor or disfavor any candidate in an election. Or in the current case of Louis Bacon who can use sponsored not for profit companies to do the same thing. Or in the case of Donald Trump who may have so much assets and resources, jets and buildings and employees and access to and influence in the media, how do you limit his self sponsoring and put him on an equal footing with a candidate who is employed and earns $100,000 a year? Campaign finance reform will be like the quieting titles act: it will be talked about and pushed from here to there and touted as something urgently needed. But few a politician, if any is going to support reforms that will limit his chances of being elected. Likewise for his party. So the corruption will continue.
If The Tribune was asked to say how much Louis Bacon and Save the Bay's and its Freeport arm and its other affiliates and other "lil gremlin " organizations and the Freeport QC and his organizations spent with The Tribune over the past few years and, more specifically over the past year, then one must conclude, as with The Punch, The Tribune cannot be fair and unbiased in reporting on matters relating to on Louis Bacon and his sponsored companies. And while the actions of The Tribune may not be criminal, it is something that will have to be addressed if any form of campaign finance reform is to take PLACE. While Louis Bacon and his sponsored companies may have not contributed directly to parties that oppose the present and current administration, they sure as hell have printed and/or have caused sufficient material to be published that is anti-government and can be considered to be political in nature and in support of the official opposition. The involvement of the national chairman of the official opposition in a plot which, for all intents and purposes, appears to be criminal in nature, and more importantly a direct assault on the current Bahamas government and a clear attempt to unseat it does beg the question of how third parties advertising political material and, in the alternative, the media publishing political material, sponsored or unsponsored and/or failing to print political material that favors or dis favors one party or another must be addressed in campaign finance reform.
So Marco Rubio was the senator from Florida who organized the protests against the Bahamas in front of the cruise ports and other places in support of the Cubans. Now he got the beating of his life in his home state of Florida. Protest that!
