FOOD For Thought: Donald Trump admitted that he used US bankruptcy laws four times to walk away from his creditors. In 2009 he walked away owing creditors more than US $1 billion. Trump, who is now worth $10 billion sees nothing wrong with this. He says many companies including the largest U.S. Airlines file for bankruptcy that allows them to stay in business. He referred to his creditors as "scum" and says the law allowed him to keep thousands of persons employed. He says if elected as president of the USA he will use similar laws to cut the country's $83 trillion debt.
on point. The murder rate has to be addressed. Young men are arming themselves for war. Automatic weapons and extended clips. Not a PLP problem but a national crisis, in fact a (western world epidemic) ALL leaders in this country should meet and come together and address this issue. What is the scripture that says two in the field, one will be taken and one left behind, two together grinding corn and one will be taken. shakespeare said it best : "he that is giddy thinks the world spins round". Meaning this government is crazy as hell so they thinking everyone else is crazy! As it relates to Fred Mitchell "it takes one to know him."
Do you know National Insurance Board is discriminating against certain Bahamian families and denying them any benefits under the National Insurance Scheme (scheme or scam). Hundreds of Bahamains who have passed the age of retirement are being told they do not qualify for old age benefits because their families own businesses or property. Others are being denied participation in the medical assistance program even though they are in their 80's and 90's and yet others in this same age group are dying and their families are not receiving funeral assistance. While it is true that many of these persons may have never contributed to the National insurance because they were housewives all their lives or farmers or fishermen is it right to deny them assistance in their old age or even in death? Some of these persons have worked but stopped before the National Insurance contributions plan came into effect. Others have worked and had contributions deducted but since their employers never made the contributions to the board they are being denied assistance, despite some of these companies being in operation today. There is one family where 6 elderly persons died over the past 5 years. NONE were given funeral benefits and none of these were allowed to participate in the drug prescription program. There is a case of a young man who has a condition that prevents him from working for weeks on end. When he applied for assistance he was told that even though he has been making contributions over the past five years (since he left high school) he does not qualify for assistance because his contributions have not been continuous. A national disgrace or scam or both!
Be aware that a great number of workers wil be losing their jobs around the Bahamas over the next few weeks and months as businesses realize they cannot afford to pay the forty percent increase in the minimum wage and the costs (national insurance etc.) associated with it. There is just not enough economic activity to sustain such an increase in labour and, unfortunately, the impact wil be felt the greatest on the family islands and in the already economically depressed areas of New Providence and Grand Bahama. Shane Gibson already threatened employers and they will have no choice but to close shop or reduce staff.
Fred Mitchell, Perry Christie, Shane Gibson Allison Maynard and the whole bunch need to take a trip to Grand Bahama and do an intensive study of the economy there. One time ago Freeport was in such a boom almost everyone on the island of Grand Bahama had two or three jobs and there were constant ads for persons in other parts of the Bahamas to come to Grand Bahama for employment. There were quality jobs that paid top dollar. Today the tallest building in Freeport is boarded up and on the market for sale as are the buildings that housed many once thriving businesses. Many other buildings have been vacant for decades and have been left to decay by their owners, many who have left Freeport when the magic left. Many Bahamians have also left Freeport because it became impossible to survive without a job. History has demonstrated that when the economy goes bad foreign investors will pack their bags, close their businesses and leave. Because we have failed to empower Bahamians and give them ownership in their own country they have little control over their fate in a bad economy. Can you imagine the road to Bah Mar all grown up with weeds, the buildings fenced in and empty? Falling into a state of disrepair slowly but eventually? Abandoned like princess towers in Freeport or a ghost town like the international bazar or the many boarded up buildings that surround the once thriving hub of activity in Freeport? Is this what y'all gonna let happen to Bah Mar with all the trash talking and hostile posturing? The bigg mistake was to allow a project of this magnitude to come into the country without one red cent of Bahamian ownership. What exactly are y'all trying to do with Bah Mar? A still birth or a trimester abortion?
While Bahamians in general and government in particular have been focused on Bah Mar and what's going there, crime is somewhat secretly spiraling further out of control. MURDER is on a steady and unrelenting climb to reach 148 successful killings in 2015. A new bloody record that no one wants but is less than 5 months from becoming a reality. And while the commissioner of police has said that crime fighting strategy, especially for murder, was not working and there had to be some rethinking, little else was said.bthe country is averaging 13 classified murders a month. The problem with a lot of these murders is that persons who are committing them do not see themselves as taking a life, innocent or tainted and so they have no remorse or no conscience about their actions. They have been programmed (brain washed) to kill and it is being done in the guise of survival or "collecting them before they collect you (dead bodies). On a recent talk show the host,in a very sad and emotional way, stated that not only is the number of illegal guns in the country increasing, but persons are now choosing fully automatic weapons and more high powered ones with extended clips to carry more a munition. They are preparing for war. Their arms outmatch any police issued service weapon, and they are being put in the mindset to use these weapons: against the police, against opposing gangs and even on persons who were once their child hood friends and bosom buddies. Kill or be killed is what they are thinking, not realizing that once you commit murder, you too, will also be killed eventually. With 90 murders already this year there are also 90 sets of families, friends and loved ones who want justice and closure to the death of their loved and eventually someone in these 90 groups, at least half of them will seek revenge. And if they go out and kill someone then there will be another group wanting revenge. This same talk show host suggested that the top brass of the police meet with the leaders of gangs, one in particular who is serving time in Fox Hill, to bring an end to this carnage. this i do not agree WiTh! Gangs, by nature are ruthless, and violent and their intention is to inflict harm and mayhem on society. Their leader have overinflated egos which will be even more overly inflated if the good guys call on them for a peace treaty. Yes they may agree to it and yes it may work for a while. But they will be looking for every opportunity to break the truce and go back to their old violent and killing ways. When that happens, the murder count will instantly double. This was proven in Mexico and Colombia recently.
