Looks like government is forgoing a real opportunity to jumpstart this economy and get it going. If BEC reduces its electricity bills by 60 percent to what it should be that will pump at least $20 million into the economy monthly. Consumer purchasing power will increase their confidence will increase and they will spend more. Not only that but with lower electricity costs businesses will be able to reduce their prices and this will result in even more economic activity. Government will realize more revenue and the cash shortages they are experiencing now will disappear.
BEC should be forced to adjust its billing and stop charging a fuel surcharge now that fuel is 60 % lower than it was a year ago. The bahamian consumer kept its part of the bargain and paid excesses on fuel cost over the past 10 years and paid even when the price of fuel tripled. Now BEC must stop hiding behind flimsy excuses.

Customs has been taxing on taxes for years. Whenever you bring a receipt from abroad and it has tax on it you will have to pay customs duty on that tax. Now you have to pay Vat on customs duty and any other charge from customs. One time ago when you brought anything from Brandsmart they would put the tax on your invoice but once you send them a document showing the items were exported they would refund the tax. But you still had to pay Bahamas customs on the refunded tax. And they want to blame the merchants for the high prices
Don't mind the government telling you that VAT is only 7.5% the way they are calculating it is will be much more on some items. So retailers will have to adjust their prices upwards to compensate or find themselves unable to pay their bills in a matter of months. what is bankruptcy?
E j bowe sounds like a jackass. Like a ferocious Pitt bull on a strong leash. More bark than If he really wanted to get the information he sought he could go to either Super Value's head office or get it from customs: but let E J Bowe prove he is not a lackey (and puppet old one at that) and do something about this 1. Why are Bahamian consumers paying a surcharge on their B E C bills when this amount should now be a negative amount deducted from their electricity bill since the cost of fuel dropped below $60 a barrel? (2). Not only is customs charging VAT on the duty they charge but persons who were unable to clear their shipments before December 31 have been charged the old duty rate PLzuS VAT! For example the duty on fridges and stoves dropped from 25% to 5% on January 1st. But customs told importers that if their shipment arrived before january 1 but they did not clear it they will have to pay the old rate of 25% plus vat or 32.5% as opposed to 12.5% under the new tariff rates. So how can you tell consumers to expect to see lower prices on these items when some importers had to pay and additional 7.5% on the old rate?
Not Enuff b u s s t o p ! i think the bus drivers have identified the reason for crime and violence and anger and mayhem in New Providence. There is just enough bus stops. Not the bus stops you use to catch the jitney but one you would use to escape the traffic of every day living. No where to pull over and get away from the crime and the gossip and the murder and the politics and the nosey neighbor and his 6 baby mamas. No where to pull over and take a break. And if you try to stop in the fast lane you get run over or you get a traffic ticket. I command every resident of New Providence to jump on a plane or boat at least two times this year and go to a family island of their choice. Say "to hell with Nassau" if only for a weekend then demand they fix the bus stop.
Many businesses saw a drastic fall off in sales during the last two weeks in January. Banks, food stores, gas stations were empty much of the day and even many streets were deserted by sunset. Was this an indication that many persons on a monthly or bi weekly income had exhausted their funds or maybe that consumers have come to reality that VAT is here and they must must now budget their funds even tighter than before. And many business saw a smaller spike in sales at the end of the month indicating that February will be the same. Another spike occurs for Valentines so many businesses will be watching to see what happens then.
Not always cured easy. Sometime the infestations is under the skin and have to take internal medicine then one can get reinfected from clothing or if someone else have it. People who have pets that live inside can fight it for years or learn to live with it
