Bahamians are a peculiar set of people. We like foreign money and foreign products but don't like foreigners. All countries depend on Foreign Direct Investments to grow their economy. The anti-foreign attitude will suppress this country. Repealing this bill is a step backwards while others are moving forward. Most of the countries in the top 20 Ease of Doing Business have very relaxed immigration policies. The key to growing any economy is Free Trade, Relaxed Immigration and Anti-Corruption.
It seems that the Gender-Based Violence bill was to protect the Rainbow community. They always want everything to be specific to them. When they don't get it then they cry foul. I read the new Protection Against Violence bill and it is very good. It is long overdue to protect all people from physical, mental, financial and other forms of abuse.
There is no mention of the Public Accounts Committee. That should be an independent organ that has its own staff. They should also be independent of the Speaker. They should have the same authority as the Supreme Court to issue writs for anyone to appear before them and testify truthfully or be charged with perjury. The PAC is supposed to be the watchdog of the Executive. Right now they don't have no teeth and have never been effective.
The funny thing is that the Bank of The Bahamas is a commercial bank and a digital wallet provider. Yet they have not taken control of the Family Island situation. Every Family Island resident and merchant should be on their system. Yet nothing is being done.
The simple solution is to legislate what needs to be changed. Both unions need to come together and draft a bill that covers everything and then lobby for it to be passed. It's as simple as that. Instead, they prefer to complain for decades like children.
I agree with Dr. Minnis. This is a huge mistake that will cost the country later. It is counterproductive to fiscal reforms of reducing the national debt. So let me see if I get this right. We remove plans to build an extension at a reduced cost of finance and construction. Now we are going to pay three times as much and use up 40 acres of prime crown land in the process. Someone needs to make this make sense. This also abandons the Master Plan for PMH that was first developed under Christie last administration.
