I believe Fred Smith is wrong or, as usual, selective about which laws he follows. The constitution does not afford arrested illegals to the same rights and freedoms as legal persons in a similar situation. It specifically addresses illegal immigrants as one of the exceptions. Furthermore, he was not unlawfully arrested.

The final paragraph is amazing...and unfortunately summarizes the true, unspoken yet accepted, culture of the Bahamas.

Does 2yrs or $2,000 sound right to Fred Mitchell for a crime he consistently refers to as an organized criminal enterprise, where "poor" Haitians pay $1500 - $5000 per head? Why did he find reducing immigration fees more pressing than increasing fines and penalties for these criminal activities?

I see no deterrent or serious attempt to stop the influx in his actions. He should stop wasting public funds on the facade of an immigration department, on temporary repatriations and the $100 per head sponsorship of return trips. These funds will be better served to accommodate the increased, and continued, demand in education, healthcare and social services.

Why not carry a gun when in the business of apprehending possible criminals? Many of whom have no identification, verifiable background and/or criminal history. Not to mention an IO was shot at recently. Did you wonder then why the young man was armed and who taught him to disrespect authorities? You probably didn't.

We don't usually hear about incidents like this, so clearly there is more to the story. I will wait to hear both sides before making assumptions about the officer or his training.

What about the goons that never applied for a passport even though they had legal status?

I have no issue with these folks having a longer wait. In the meanwhile, the same documents used to apply for the passport can be used to prove status...there was/is no need to expand the department and increase overhead for this temporary demand.

The immigrants from these impoverished nations are also the ones that have helped to, and will continue to devalue our passport.

It could be that. Or it could be a Haitian or one someone of Haitian descent doing favors and/or getting paid. We are so quick to throw other Bahamians under the bus.

Your bias is always very blatant in any Haitian related story.

If he said nothing at all should be done, you and the other Haitians will use it in your video as "proof" of your mistreatment and disregard for Haitian life. Haitians are not usually victims, but boy do you like to spin it that way. A victim mindset is a very serious thing.

By the way, I hope you are right and the "no go zones" do not exist...to me that's silly. Immigration should go any and every where there are suspected illegals.

Are you that slow that 'alleged' has to be inserted in every comment you read? If I believe it, it's my opinion. Break out an English textbook if you want to learn more about fact vs. opinion.

Mr. Gibson is not only the messenger, he is a major part of the story. So while there is no perfect forum, in this instance, there is perfect timing. His timing appears self-serving and aimed at presenting his clients as victims, and the police officers as bullies. What about their presumption of innocence in this pending matter?

Also, what do I know to be justified? Quote me.
