What a disgusting, repugnant comment. There are no parallels here. The government sold BPC the rights to explore for oil and with that, comes a contractual obligation for BPC to drill this well.
The Bahamas runs on fossil fuel. It's how the tourists get there and it's how you run your cars and boats. Currently all of your oil needs are met by oil that is tankered to your islands at an inflated cost, from a foreign country.
It would be nice if the Tribune could at least get a photo of the right ship. that's the Drillmax, not the Icemax. The name is literally on the side of the ship, in HUGE letters. But hey, why let facts get in the way of a good story?
And how many of the 7.25 million annual tourists to the Bahamas would have made it there without using significant amounts of oil, in the form of aviation fuel, or diesel powered ships?
Like it or not, the tourist industry is driving oil demand. Without oil, the Bahamas has no tourist industry.
I put it to you that covering your islands with wind turbines and solar panels will do little to attract tourists to an already struggling industry!
