It was most definitely not Britain that brought slavery to the Americas. That was Spain and Portugal, hundreds of years earlier. Britain ended it. Unilaterally, with no support from any other nation. By force. And instead of thanking them, you write this crap?

Air conditioners, in England? In a chapel, what is more? Are you out of your mind?

OldFort2012 says...

How is this good news? The airlines will simply pass the cost onto the airfare, which all of us pay. So the money will come straight out of our pocket and into the pockets of the Ministers de jour.

Another tax, plain and simple. Pun intended.

The really funny thing is that setting up software to check the CB database against the invoice is a piece of piss.

I could run this government with 30 civil servants. All the others could go dig ditches.

And that is the real problem....

Do we consume oil? Yes, we do. That is just a fact. Do we wish we could move 100% to renewables. Of course. But we all know that that is pie in the sky and that we will be among the last countries in the world to get there. Because we are dirt poor. No one can afford a new electric vehicle and as a country we cannot afford the tens of billions it would cost to move to renewables. We are stuck where we are until renewable costs collapse and that is decades away. Those are just facts. Everything else is wishful thinking and pie in the sky. We will still be driving oil consuming Japanese bangers decades after the rich nations have only electric cars. Fact.

IF (big IF) there is oil, we have no choice but to exploit it. It is also the moral thing to do. Since we consume oil, how is it OK to let others produce what WE consume and take the environmental risk on themselves? Our consumption, our risk. That is the way it should be.

OldFort2012 says...

Funnily enough, I agree with Banker. There most probably is no oil, at least not in commercial quantities.

However, should I be proved wrong, NOT exploiting it would be financial folly and moral hypocrisy of the highest order. We would be saying that it's OK for others to spoil THEIR environment for the oil WE consume. How is that fair?

The financial aspect should be self evident. If we cannot manage a gift like oil, which could solve all our financial mismanagement of the past, them we might as well admit immediately that we were never mature enough to run our own affairs and beg the US to come and take over our affairs, lock, stock and barrel. We would be saying that our Constitution, Laws and Democracy are so shallow and our own abilities to manage our affairs so non-existent that we are not fit to have a Nation.

Why the $20 cannot be paid online remains a mystery. Is our government really that useless?

BTW, question for you: does anyone check those licences? Are there Rangers going around?

The answer is the same as you would give to a cousin twice removed of your ex-wife's (who you have in the meantime divorced and hate) who lived in your house and robbed you and you then threw out. In the meantime he contracted AIDS and now wants to return and live with you. It's not even no. It's a Hell, No!
