**Step one**; Fire the CEO and top BPL managers and replace them with competent managers who deliver results, not excuses. **Step two**; Immediately bring in a solar plant and alternative energy generation to supply reliable electrical energy, using the money spent by our government flying around the world telling others that we need money for climate change. **Step three** Focus on who is qualified for the job, not whether they are Bahamian, or PLP or FNM. We need results in this nation, not just votes. Our nation is failing on too many important matters and metrics. The Bahamian people are paying dearly for the petty politics we currently operate under. **Step four** Repeat step one. Hire competent experienced managers with the ability to hire and fire as they see fit. Those employees who can't cut it need to find another job. The Bahamian people, based on the electricity rates we pay alone, deserve better service, quality and reliability from BPL than what we presently experience. This is a national crisis. By allowing this to continue, this utter failure, we are saying that we do not deserve better. The present BPL situation in The Bahamas must be the top priority for our leadership. This impacts our quality of life and our entire economy. Those who do not understand this, or worse ignore this, do not deserve leadership positions. Asking for money for climate change should be secondary to going solar in this country. Maybe then others will take us seriously.
Progress defined how? All metrics suggest otherwise. If we count words as progress, so be it. Yet, how are we doing here in regards to our future. Can't keep the lights on. Can't keep the water flowing. Can't make a decent phone call. Prices rising while wages stagnate. A hospital in crisis. A broke NIB. Our educated children leaving in droves. The sea is rising. And, we want money. And, just may get it. Whom you ask? The politicians first. Success!
"Our priorities for this fund include spending to make our infrastructure more climate-resilient, our transition to clean energy, conservation of our coastal zones, reduction in biodiversity loss, regenerative agriculture, carbon sequestration, and participation in natural asset-backed carbon credit programmes. Blended finance is a smart way to close the climate financing gap at a time when solutions cannot be postponed.” Interesting that 4 out of the 6 initiatives could have already been adopted by The Bahamas. What will super charge our leaders to all of a sudden embark on programs that have been available before? Oh. I see, 500,000,000 dollars. Something fishy here? And just what are; natural asset-backed carbon credit programmes? Does anyone know?
Precisely. As if there is a national awareness, or even a glimmer of concern for what is coming. Any discussion of what needs to be done, here at home, or a modicum of social responsibility to do our part? Wow. Just wow.
So, let me get this right. Tourism is spending millions of dollars of taxpayers money to attract tourists to The Bahamas. How many tourism employees have ever run a a business? They encourage other Bahamians to take out loans and put their hard earned money, time and effort into building and operating these establishments to provide jobs, other businesses and to provide tax revenue needed to run this country. And then, we utterly fail on nearly every Family Island. What makes sense here? Why doesn't tourism call for an emergency meeting? Are any Tourism officials or employees seeing their salaries reduced? No. But the ones who have taken the risks in providing The Bahamas with tax revenue and other Bahamians with job and business opportunities are the ones having to bear the losses in revenue and the bad publicity. The answer is staring us in the face. Fire incompetent managers and employees. If we need to hire foreigners, then do so. But, if anyone thinks that The Bahamas has a future under these present conditions, they need a good whack upside the head. This is a national failure. Period.
sheeprunner, Isn't it tiring, and an absolute shame that we have to spend our time and energy, year after year, complaining about the same basic issues? Each successive government, no matter who is in power, seems utterly and totally incompetent to run this country. Our so-called leaders continue to kick the can down the road. Do they really expect things to improve for the Bahamian people while they live in their big houses and drive their big cars? Do they care?
Fine. The PM should publicly denounce DeSantis' remarks and make a public statement that says in no uncertain terms that a Mr. DeSantis is not welcome in The Bahamas.
Why can;t we simply call it what it is? A national failure of political leadership. Harbour Island is the same as every other Bahamian community. Fire those who can't do the job, instead of rewarding them for a vote.
