The issue is two fold. The government definitely needs to push for a natural gas service pipeline to the Bahamas. At the same time it shouldn't mix up the government employment and government management with it. What it should do is seek a private company partner who is willing to accept reasonable regulation to provide good service to the Bahamas while assuring the company a reasonable return on investment. It needs a partner who it can rely on to assure the people of the Bahamas that it will take their interest at heart by realizing that it can sell more product and make more money from a prosperous and growing Bahamas. This is done by structuring the partnership so that the partner gains when the Bahamian economy grows.
Backing this company with appropriate loan guarantees the company will cost the Bahamas Government and its people nothing in the way of real risk or investment at the same time it will provide faster and more reasonably priced product than could be achieved by a government owned entity.
The study did not include the use of Natural Gas as a motor vehicle fuel which could have even more dramatic effect on the economy including reducing Gasoline prices by about 1/2 of current levels while dramatically improving air quality. Natural Gas is also the natural partner to leverage solar, wind and similar alternative power sources into maximum value for the Bahamas.
