they keep saying we pay no taxes, but its just semantics... property tax, fuel surcharge, VAT, national insurance, etc. all the same.. NHI tax/surcharge? i think we need to brace ourselves to pay for even more including garbage collection, BPL and Bahamasair debt, etc. the Consolidated fund will be needed mostly to pay wages and pensions...
good to see Tiger back in the news because of golf.... despite how the current Minister feels about sports tourism, i wonder how much it would have cost if we had to pay for all the free publicity we are getting everytime a sports report on TV and in the print media mentions the word 'Bahamas'. of course if there was no Albany developed by these foreigners we dont want, none of this would happen..
i have to agree with PLP on this.. it is bad enough that the PM doesn't know whats happening within his cabinet, but even worse if he were to admit it, hence the denials... as for FOIA, even when it becomes law, i'm certain that a public service that for decades perfected the art of ducking and dodging, will continue to frustrate requests for information, and likely you will have to go to court to force compliance each time a request is made, something most of us can't afford...
there are always folks who dont want to leave the premises when the party ends.. if they live in the real world, they must have figured the sweetness could not last forever.. you can't get what the man doesn't have...
a majority of us still dont want to accept that we have severe limitations in this country in terms of dollars, bodies, know-how, etc.,.. where/how will new opportunities arise? we are fundamentally just buyers and sellers. how much clothes can we buy in NY or Miami, markup, then try to resell here? look at our hospitality industry.. not a single major, successful hotel in the country owned by bahamians except maybe Comfort Suites.. good news is we dont need to do it all if someone else is prepared too and we can reap the benefits e.g. Atlantis.. no local ownership there but plenty jobs and hundreds of millions of dollars moving through the economy.. dont see any disadvantage for bahamians with that.. we couldn't do it....
on the other hand, what position will we put these people in by not telling them anything, keeping them on the job, they will christmas shop, then get let go in January just before the credit card bill comes.. what a dilemma..
i have advocated that we law-abiding citizens have the right to carry concealed weapons to give us a chance when we come under attack by those opposed to law and order... this article further convinces me that is the right thing to do.. now, if we are to have a referendum, this should certainly be a question put to the people...
i'm certain this is not the first time something like this has happened on earth. secondly, gov't has available to it heaps of advice from agencies like IDB and many others.. given all of this, it should not be too difficult to make sense of a deal that will work for all. we don't live in a vacuum and we don't need to keep reinventing the wheel...
i question the usefulness of this position Ace Newbold has.. he and Minnis seem to be out of sync and when you query this guy, most answers he doesn't have or the response is something like PM says what he likes when he feels like...
