europeans travel to Asia by the millions which is further away than the Bahamas.. if we can figure out why, then we will know how to attract them.. my personal opinion is we are too expensive and dont offer value for money, so they go elsewhere...
we need to remember that prior to the General election and quite commonly throughout the Caribbean, patronage and awarding of contracts and jobs, etc., was considered a by-product of victory accepted by all. so despite being ethically wrong, we didn't see it as such and it was practised to some extent by all...
you dont remedy corruption by giving more money.. that sounds like extortion.. you stop corruption with aggressive investigations, heavy fines and jail time..
i have to agree with Davis on this.. no benefit to be gained by piblicizing such info.. indeed, u will never get universal agreement on suitable salaries for almost any job.. remember the 6 figure salaries BEC staffers working power lines on the street earn? if they want to impress me, reveal the generous pensions former politicians and GGs receive til death.. remember, no particular skill, knowledge or experience required for those jobs...
this is not the only example, but i should add that while they let go the contract people and send the rehired home, there will be no savings to the Treasury since, as this example demonstrates, the intention is simply to give that money to others.. its more a redistribution of the largess...
don't know how you counter this argument.. at the end of the day, a monopoly is a monopoly just like BEC and the rest.. at least on GB, they get better service..
to say a pay rise will stymie corruption is foolishness.. the corrupt will be so regardless.. more relevant is that only cabinet ministers are fulltime employees.. the rest do this as a hobby.. show up when the house meets if you feel like it.. walk in and out when in session as you like.. remember Treasure Cays attendance?.. no pay rise necessary. plus, they get pensions too for parttime work..where does the excess end?
this is not new.. we are a country of show and no substance.. fire engine should be working for bahamians too.. its a safety thing.. gov't continues to fail in their responsibilities.. its a disease in this country...
