Exactly - and this is contrary to Law which says that no interest rate can be charged to exceed 20% per annum (no matter if you call it a late fee or a bunny rabbit fee). You can't invent and create all kinds of silly named fees and add them all up on a customer so that he/she is paying effectively 30% and claim that your rate is 18.5% and the rest are "fees".
Lawmakers are well aware of this. Wonder why they allow this to continue? What would be their incentive to sit quiet?
What would happen if food stores put ALL breadbasket items on ONE aisle in the store and roped it off and charged a $5 "entrance" fee to that aisle where no other aisle has such a charge. If you go in to buy 2 bags of flour at $3.40 each which should be $6.80 - you would instead pay $11.80 when you include the entrance fee - making your effective cost per bag to be $5.90 which I am sure is in excess of the maximum price for that weight bag of flour.
Would Price Control pounce on the food store that did this???? You bet they would!!!! Big time !!!!
But banks do effectively the same thing and nobody says a word.
Coexist and use natural resources? Haiti is much more blessed with natural resources than we are. You cannot coexist with people who choose to live in squalor and have 7 children per family to enjoy the garbage dump conditions with them. What kind of people are these? What kind of people breed ceaselessly inside a garbage dump? Do they have no love for children? Jesus said "Suffer the little children to come unto me." He didn't say anything about making them suffer in garbage dumps.
"Mr Maynard suspected this happened because foam was not used to put out the previous fires. He said fire officials used foam the third time..."
AND
"So whoever we deal with needs to be told that we need 120 megawatts of temporary power right away. They can install that while they doing what they have to do. They can install it within three to six months."
who can install it? What group of idiots is going to install a multi-million dollar engine in a place run by IDIOTS who don't know how to operate a FOAM fire fighting system? It took them until the third time to use the foam? This was likely because the cube foam containers were empty and had to be refilled from the 55 gallon drums, and that no fire drills have been practiced for years.
One of two things needs to happen here:
1) Fire every single person who was working at the plant on any of the fire incident days. Pay them their severance pay and any other kind of crazy pay the union can think of. Pay them whatever to get rid of their idiotic butts. I bet the names of those responsible will come out to the light of day real quick;
OR
2) Divide 150 million dollars by the 300,000 persons in this country and pass a law in parliament that each citizen (man, woman, child) must pay into the Treasury that pro-rated amount by December 31st or face imprisonment. That's $500 each. If you have a family of 5 - too bad for you. Come up with $2,500 or your whole family goes to prison. This is just STUPID and unless something radical like this is proposed the average conch eating Bahamian will NOT understand the size of this catastrophe and be upset enough to call their MPs every 10 minutes and ring the phones off the hook. This will then lead to the action in (1) above - firing and/or finding out who the culprits were.
No serious action? You will get no serious result. Everyone will just keep quiet and go along as "normal" and we the taxpayers will get the pleasure of paying 150 million dollars and have to cut our corned beef budget in half.
"who acknowledged the relocation effort could present a lot of business opportunities."
???? The only "business" will be monkey business and the raising of our debt from 8 billion to 16 billion before next election to pay for Haitian welfare.
Why don't we all just commit suicide and leave a big suicide note that says "Welcome to ALL Haitians - the Bahamas now belongs to you."
Thompson is right - work permits are the key. The government knows this but still keeps giving them out and renewing for over 3 years - in some cases 17 years. Look at the ferry boats in Abaco, hanging out over the rails. That government wont attack from the angle of employment proves that they only flammin. They cant live without food. Where do they get money to buy food and generator gas? That is the million dollar question. The real key.
OldFort - the talking points these days are that the shanty towns are full of Bahamians and that if we move against them we would only be hurting our own people. Sounds like a hostage negotiation.
The truly sad part of the whole thing is the staggering number of Bahamians that are too dumb to realize that Haiti has declared WAR on the Bahamas. Just because they don't see army tanks rolling down Bay Street they assume we are not under attack.
Trust me - army tanks would be much better. One shot and you're dead. Over. This current method is like watching our country waste away slowly like a skin-and-bone cancer patient.
Outlaw all relations with the EU. Even block phone calls from those countries. Ban airlines. We dont need their banks or investment or people here. Block all EU internet ip addresses too.
"...plan to visit more Family Island shanty towns to get more residents to join their suit against the government."
Exactly the way they think, and eventually as their population increases they will totally destroy our government and the Tonton Macoute will rule the day.
"...that every single shanty town is in an FNM constituency, so they are hounding their own voters out of their homes.”
Here, using the threat of their numerous votes. I've said many times, nobody understands Pindling's "majority rule" better than Haitians. They are becoming the majority, flying into the maternity wards quicker can than you can say "court injunction."
We need to return to British rule. Everyone here is a cousin of the next one - and so there are no real rules or enforcement. Everyone pays a higher price for everyone else trying to "save".
There are no real short cuts, as our country is learning now about the high cost of cheap labour.
