And this is why we have no serious Music festivals, which could be developed by Bahamians, and feature Bahamian entertainers alongside Foreign big names. Can Bahamians play Country? Rock and Roll? Classical music? Jazz? This position taken by this "union" actually hurts them. They would be better off to develop their own music festival instead of insisting the Government protect them against the will and desire of others (and their $$) in what they'd visit and pay to see/hear.
Our Government has allowed the cruise lines predatory business practices to flourish at the expense of Bahamians. Private islands and now this port allow them a closed loop revenue stream, totally captive with very little outflow into The Bahamas, or for Bahamians. The captive insurance cost required by them is just the first bleeder/revenue stream tapping Bahamians first. Our Government had an unprecedented opportunity via Covid to reset the game, but were too desperate for the few imaginary baubles allowed to escape into the hands of Bahamians.
First, $40 mil is based on $500/sq ft, ludicrous unto itself, but it would've run $1k/sq ft with cost overruns all done. Now it's $93Mil, so call it $200mil. If Government would stop the crony contractor scam it maybe could get back to reasonable costs. They can do nothing true and correct, never mind cost effectively.
They assume power, but they have none. They have authority under the rule of law. The day our politicians learn this important distinction we move forward, upward, onward, together.
Yes, the lawful are being driven out of business with all the regulations and compliances. Ignore them and businesses can be successful. Ironic but true. Passing all these new laws (with fees) to satisfy the Foreign lenders/masters/national debt is pointless with no enforcement. Enforcement is not threats of summary conviction, it is patrols with eyes open, periodic checks.
Thing is the Port Dept is already charging the exorbitant fees but I'm thinking it hasn't been signed into law yet? Has this even gone through the process? Debate? Sneaky Bastid said no new taxes but he sure jacked up a few, including not mentioning duty rate changes. Anyone seen an official Gazette of any of this? Or is it all digital now?
No confusion, their self preservation outweighs all else. Pure $$$ grab. He says it isn’t too many times to be taken Seriously. And they are also going to inspect private boats, where is the man power for that? And port dept vessels anywhere but Nassau? My renewal just went up by 1500%. Time to sell in Fla.
I have an issue with stale dated (old) meats being imported, meats that cannot be sold in the U.S. However, be prepared for a major price increase if the Government starts demanding dating from the vendors. soon to be out of date packaged goods are cheaper so they get imported, sometimes already stale. Seconds in produce and Fruit is common. We cannot afford firsts.
