Nothing is free. Government takes from earners/consumers via taxes (ever increasing) and re-purposes it for it's own devices. The road to hell is paved in good intentions, but in this case it has to be obvious that no one wants the Government in charge of their health care, unless we are satisfied with BEC/BPL, the Post office, Tourism, Unfunded Government pensions, Immigration, the economy, the current state of Government healthcare and all the other botched government services.
Is there one that does function properly?

A total upheaval from top to bottom/island to island dues not "a few regular transfers" make.
Something stinks, and it ain't K.Peter.

WTO requires we drop duty rates to 8-10% across the board, and prevents the high duty rates to protect local products. Problem is we negotiated a gradual reduction by 2025.
Ministry of finance was hoping (against all sensibility) that they could ride a revenue "swell" by collecting VAT and Duty! Some damn fool elected Economist forecast that tripe.
We still have a business community 90% clueless as to what is coming, what has been "negotiated" on our behalf. Look at the surprise when government actually implemented VAT!
(8 years + after committed to)
Fault lies on both Government and private sector as the former treats the latter like mushrooms.
If the Government won't inform the private sector better inform itself!

Therein lies the rub: Customs has the authority to investigate fraud where suspected and prosecute.
No more, no less.
No, it is easier to make new rules which no one follows, nor can understand.

While a shake up can "displace" routines of fraud and graft it is no real answer to the problem.
The fraud quickly re-establishes itself where ever it lands.
Looking a little deeper it seems purposed to place Nassau officers in Freeport, most of whom would have little understanding of the H.C.A. imports regime.
Added to the supposed Launch of the Customs "Single payee Window system" and given the fact it gives the H.C.A. bonded situation no consideration, and in fact as it was presented early 2017 directly contravenes court rulings pertaining to Bahamas Customs predictable and arbitrary attacks, I'd say another Bahamas Customs attack on Freeport is scheduled.
every 5-6 years is about right.
You'd think they'd learn......

30 years ago there were plumbing problems, brought about by too many envelopes being flushed after postal workers had pillaged the contents!
Nothing has changed, 20 years ago the mail was in a HUUUGE pile in the middle of the great hall, surrounded by 12 plus Kiosks for sorting, with two occupied by very slow moving employees.....
Only difference is the building has fallen apart further.

Actually kind of scary, lopping off peoples heads.
Mugabe type behavior. Always comes around to bite the head ass in the end.

Sure it can be fixed. Throw a billion $$ at it, fire incompetent staff including those in administration who fit that bill. Put healthcare at two arms lengths from Government and political interference.
50 years of dismantling structure and rules, ethics and proficiency is not easy to correct without serious hard decisions being made if one wants to fix it.
Any of you really want the Government to supply your health care? (and with tax payer money as well)

Another irrelevant political hack crying over spilt milk, didn't get what he wanted, can't make no money or shake the dilly tree.

The_Oracle says...

Exactly what I expected the legislation to do, the opposite of what was intended.
Typical, fits exactly with every thing the government (and Bahamians) has done to get the Bahamas exactly where it is.
Purely by accident.
And will they back off of it? hell no, they'll amend it further down the rabbit hole of failure.
