So Lawyer up and file for Judicial review. The Bahamas Government and sundry Ministries have yet to win a case, largely through their own incompetence, flying in the face of common law in most cases. Stand for something or fall for this latest incursion and assault on sensible lawful conduct.
"Nonetheless, in an interview with Tribune Business last month, Michael Maura, Arawak Port Development Company (APD) chief executive, said customs officials indicated that they would be "reasonable" with its new powers and would not impose sweeping sanctions for infractions that were not the shipper's fault." A worthless platitude that I doubt Mr. Maura himself believes. And if not the shippers fault, who's then? the vendor? the recipient? Customs isn't going to walk away empty handed. New rules to further encumber the private sector for their own Customs incompetence and ineptitude. They are complete idiots who will never learn. If the shippers get hit a few times then the whole logistic will change at great cost and delay. If the vendors get hit they'll not supply the Bahamas. If the retailers get hit their markup to compensate goes up.
An obvious misprint, he means to stay within the top 150. Doubtful but more feasible. "Mr Christie yesterday issued the ‘30-day challenge’ to government department heads, calling on them to come up with innovative ways to improve service delivery." I pray this isn't the challenge he gave Bahamas Customs which created/triggered the idiotic new Regs. on imports.
The biggest problem is every 5 years each elected Government is left no road map from the prior administration, thus must start from scratch. Hell of a way to run a country. Reams and reams of Bureau-speak language designed to obfuscate the real agenda added to intrinsic ineptitude on our behalf.
There was some Private sector input though not facilitated or solicited, as the information could be had, until Zhivargo Laing fired the Bahamas negotiation team and sequestered all information to himself and Raymond Winder. Not that the PLP or FNM did anything prior but muddle through ill equipped, understaffed and Blind as bats. Leslie Miller slept through most round table meetings which silenced the rest of the Bahamas delegation. Not having the Input they went ahead and Signed the EU-EPA trade agreement, in excess of WTO rules and requirements.(super WTO) This is starting to bite us, but will really do so over the next 5 years. Non the less the information can be had from all the other signatory nations (websites) as they are not treating their private sectors as one would treat mushrooms. Almost all legislation enacted during the last 20 odd years has been enacted with the specific purpose of bringing our laws into WTO and EU-EPA compliance. The few others were to comply with OECD demands and in a panic.
Awkward, being the "token white" in the "white peoples" party. local Money is tugging at the FNM, while the PLP have Numbers Money and Chinese money. No contest. Meanwhile they play a game of poker with their own party, bluffing til the hatred of the PLP outweighs the disdain of losing control of the party to Doc. If they had a plan for the country it could be forgiven, but they only want self preservation. Cowards to a man. They as much as the PLP, Pindling, Ingraham and Christie have created this abortion we call home, Albeit a barely recognizable home.
Any bureaucracy that becomes incompetent or cannot administer the existing laws and rules derived thereon will create more rules and regulations under which they will penalize, victimize and boost revenues. This road is well worn globally and historically, and never ever ends well. Unfortunately the general population suffers and will pay the price while the despots political families and "inner circle glitterati" walk away with the stolen revenues and national assets.
A debate is all well and fine, but what is really needed are answers to all the serious allegations of misconduct, pilfering, kickbacks, cronyism, malfeasance, and gross ineptitude. Oh, I forgot, answers to the level of Chinese infiltration/purchase of M.P.'s alongside the Numbers bosses. A debate would only be a platform to wax eloquent and baffle with B.S.
Please, in this one thing, please follow thru and resign, go back to surgery or whatever it is you do. Try take Loretta with you too, but be ready to duck the slap!
