As to whether they have the money to finance such a project, we will never know, as the Government will stall and stymie this and any other project to death by 1000 bureaucratic cuts. Political interference in what should be private investment and development and risk, is why we have the IMF breathing down our backs, worried about their loans to the Bahamas. The only legitimate concern should be Environmental safeguards, a job that they have failed miserably at over and over. Dredge this, scarify that, run with the money but after we get our cut!
Would have ben nice for Someone to have made an announcement PRIOR to the parade so interested Bahamians could have planned to watch it, I caught it by accident, then saw it proper on the replay in the afternoon.
Tal you so full of B.S. GB power is profitably run, in fact their profit probably equals BEC losses! Same basic rates in both cases, courtesy of the Port Authority rate structure guaranteeing them a minimum 10% return on investment. If it wasn't profitable, the foreign ownership would be long gone! Asking for BEC in Grand Bahama would be like trading bad chicken for bad Pork!
Wage and hiring freezes will help, as the customer count and purchase amount will drop. Social services will eat up more and more revenue, offsetting their dream of more money. Paying off any part of the National debt was an outright lie to begin with. It is gonna take 5 years for most of us to even begin to learn decent record keeping habits. We already have a high percentage of marginalized people, this whole ill conceived exercise/money grab will marginalize many middle class families. Trickle down is a joke, more like flooded out!
Government is driving the bus, but the IMF has the map and whip! Between the Government fudging the numbers (or not knowing them) and the IMF "Experts" giving instructions based on B.S. data, where else could the bus go but over the cliff. Or off potters Cay dock.
Businesses aught to cut every Government Department off when they go beyond 30 or 60days! The public fund the Government in its entirety, and we are supposed to carry their dead assets also? As for "spreading peoples personal salaries and bonuses" information, you are servants of the public, and Government employees, and are subject to public scrutiny, in your conduct and renumeration. We could use a lot more of that apparently.
A bad situation all around, especially by the Bahamian people saddled by half a billion debt on BEC alone. Wasn't so long ago most families used candle light, kerosene, be ready to go back, for old times sake! Incompetence will get you in the end. Painfully most often.
Sure, boycott and be the first to fall, and alone! Make no mistake, the Government means to target non compliant businesses, especially those who can be targeted safely from a political perspective. We as a country have found ourselves facing this (and more to come) precisely because we accept mediocre leadership and petty political party B.S. designed to keep us mollified and believing the elected serve us! They serve themselves, and are now ducking the bill, and are sticking us with it.
Incredible that the Government would consider "fining or penalizing" a business for wanting to be transparent and help the public understand! Educating the public will fall on the private sector very hard by default as the Government has been far from professional, competent or concise and keeps baiting and switching. They do not care how the private sector complies, just that they do, and do the job of collecting, a job they are incapable of obviously!
Given the "leniency"period is to last 2months, even though the general Government leniency period policy in regards to unpaid taxes is forever. Are they saying that Private sector education efforts must stop at 2 months? In any case, when the public realize what has been put on them the Government will no doubt point the finger at the private sector and deny any responsibility at all, even thought the full cause, need and effect lies at their feet! Only in the Bahamas...........
It would be nice if the "VAT team" in Grand Bahama would get their stories right between themselves also, they've contradicted each other a few times on important details and procedures which is ludicrous at this late date! Software, like Rome, isn't built in a day.
