Thats 3 stores reporting, they could be indicative of all businesses but cant tell from this. What stands out but wasnt stated, **prices have skyrocketed, but total revenue remains almost the same. Thats a bad sign**. For a business it "could" mean increased costs but no comparable revenue increase, it would depend on whether they were able to source from cheaper suppliers
They exaggerate just like the politicians. The average junkanoo person is likely spending 800 or less on their costume. To someone earning near minimum wage, yes that 500-800 will be a sacrifice. When someone pays 3500 on a costume, that costume will be decked out with beads and feathers and likely 1/3 of the cost is what they paid someone else to make and decorate it. The lion's share of a fancy costume is feathers then beads. If those are minimal, and they decorated themselves, they spent less than 500.
"*increase in employment across the board - although the number of persons employed has “decreased” since 2019.*"
I wish they would not use all these euphemisms. "*increase in employment*", but according to this article, employment actually decreased from a "normal" economy. We're back to near0, yes thats much better than negative 99, but its still "near0" and forecasted not to move from that anytime soon.. without innovation
Interesting that the costume used for the photo is unfinished. Junkanoo is a mystery. They practice in open fields, people love it, flock to it, but then they argue, it dont sound good unless you on Bay St.
Why do we quote "*error on the side of caution so much*"? Since Dorian we've heard this alot with overhyped hurricane reporting. No matter how unlikely a storm is to hit us, people are driven into a frenzy to "*prepare*" because "*better to be safe*". No, its better to act on good information because it costs time and money to "*prepare*". And the constant false alarms lead to apathy.
I separate that from this. The air was quite damp on Tuesday and it could have very easily been a small rain shower. Ive noticed though that quite often their forecasts are off by several hours. Same happened last week with the gale warning. The promised rain was off by 24 hours. I dont question their competence, I question whether they have correct/sufficient resources to do their jobs effectively
"*Ministry of Finance, releasing August and September’s monthly fiscal numbers last Friday just as Bahamians were heading home for Christmas, *"
Good timing. Noone's paying attention... yet
"*disclosed that the deficit for the three months to end-September 2023 hit $58m as compared to just $20.5m during the same period in the prior fiscal year.*:
"*Mr Halkitis added that the administration “have met or exceeded all of our projections”, which contrasts with its recent June and 2023-2023 fiscal year-end report*"
Whats puzzling is, if this first quarter is the weakest all the time, as stated in the article, why would projections be so optimistic? "Reality for the first quarter showing a tripling of the deficit? They know their expenses, theyve been in 2 years and according to them tourism has historic numbers. The narrative doesnt add up. Better tourism numbers than expected but a tripled deficit.
As the article states, they have 3 quarters to make up. I hope the bet is on growth and not new taxes. Turnquest tried the new tax route with 12% VAT and collections dropped

It **is** very odd, but these guys in particular do seem to relish using the whip.
