Mr. Evans seriously misunderstands how to interpret the Bible. If he believes that biblical commands are to be followed literally, then he needs to consider that BOTH testaments of Scripture approve of slavery. If we followed the Bible literally we would never have condemned that evil institution. The Bible allows things we condemn (e.g. slavery) and condemns things that we allow (e.g. lending money at interest: Exodus 22:25; Leviticus 25:36-37). Intelligent interpretation of the Bible requires recognizing the vast amounts of knowledge and progress humans have gained since biblical times, including in the area of human sexuality. Bishop Desmond Tutu was a wise and compassionate Christian who knew what it means to interpret the Bible with justice. Mr. Evans and other fundamentalists need to learn this also - the sooner the better.

On Anglicans should not canonise Bishop Tutu
