Now bear with me, I am completely ignorant of these matters, and I don’t participate on social media. Whenever I read articles in the newspaper and see they get really strange or odd I always notice “Facebook” mentioned somewhere and I think I’m now starting to understand why.

I did some brief research in my spare time and what I found was simply amazing. There is an article on buzzfeed, a very popular gossip site, about Bahamian women standing up for natural hair. Another website talks of a revolutionary Bahamian movement called “support the puff”. Sharon Turner’s blog even came back to life to discuss this controversy. There is even a petition with more than 500 signatures to address what some deem as a fight against natural hair.

The narrative makes it seem like the Ministry of Education is against natural hair, which I think most of us could say is really questionable, but step back and look at all of that, what does that tell you?

The reaction is mind boggling. Why don’t we have that kind of reaction to the state of the economy? Why don’t we have that kind of reaction for issues in our community? Why are people so quiet on issues that really matter?

It's almost as if these people were sitting on the sidelines waiting for someone to shout "black!" so they could pick up picket signs and start making noise.

You make a very very excellent point here. It seems this is how things go nowadays, you wait on the sidelines till the perfect opportunity comes along to ride the wave. Only if it was that easy...

Truth be told though, many like me are turning to other sources of Bahamian news.

Well it’s good to read critically and consider the facts. I think the Tribune has done a good job of having open or semi-open discussions in the form of a comment section. It helps clean up a lot of the misrepresentations from both sides of the political spectrum. But I believe you are right, people are changing the way they get news.

Once again Nicole can't see the forest through the trees.

I have to agree with you. Tourism could quite possibly be the only thing keeping the country afloat at this juncture. The intellectuals sure have an amusing take on things but too bad the situation on the ground is far far less than the ideal.

Diversification is a beaten horse right now. The Government and the people are only going to do what works. We will have to delicately manage the tourism economy until we stop talking about diversification and actually diversify.

If this is true...

Good point. At this stage of the game, I’m convinced that the Tribune is just trying to bait reaction, and if it isn’t the Tribune then it’s these so called “anonymous sources”. You know what they say about anonymous sources and journalism...

We are all smarter than that. Let the convention happen as soon as possible. What we are seeing right now is downright disgusting.

But that’s under the assumption that people like to follow the constitution.

Anyway, don’t you however find it interesting that the Tribune drops these statements in for good measure, even though the central council hasn’t even determined a date for the convention yet;

This move has angered some FNMs, with several of them telling this newspaper on Friday that the announcement is proof of yet another strategy by leader Dr Hubert Minnis to hold on to his position.

Party insiders also said there are some who feel a convention should be held as early as April to allow the party to get over its leadership issues with adequate time to position itself for the 2017 general election.

The hardcore fact is that you can use the opinions here as a mini poll and compare it to the wider population.

What you state here is merely an assumption. If that poll was still open, I could write a script that would easily reverse those results ten fold.

This forum does not reflect the wider population. The voices on here are a very very small minority.

In any event, the opposition leader can only do one of two things, he can call a convention or not call a convention. In the grander scheme of things, this current government still has the tactical advantage. When the “real” democratic process starts it’ll be the unforgiving electorate who decides what’s going down.

Memories are getting dim, but that’s just an indicator that politics is very much alive. The newspapers really entertained me this week.

Why is this? The common people know exactly what is going on.

I’ve had my suspicions for a while but if this amount of screaming continues, I’ll be thoroughly convinced that Minnis just might be the closest person to busting this 40-year old system wide open, but for him, things won’t be easy at all, talk about a long shot.

When that election machine gets into full gear, people head ga be more than just swinging all over the place.
