Sand dollar ! This concern is exactly why the sand dollar was introduced. I firmly believe it has the potential to solve the problem but needs a serious and concentrated effort to make it work. People need to know how to use it and then they actually do use it.
I too have experienced the issue where a shop's card machine was down so I had to pay cash. I would have bought more items but didn't have enough cash on hand. The cell service was up so I could have transferred sand dollars if I had them or if the shop was able to take them. ( I would have set up an account too if they could accept them )
I don't see it replacing cash but it definitely could supplement it. It gives another option for payment if someone doesn't have enough cash on them, card machine is down, power is out or any other random thing that happens on the island. Most importantly - it's secure! You don't have to carry bags of cash anywhere. Your staff can't help themselves to the kitty.
Businesses should first be encouraged to accept it as a form of payment - more money goes to them than via credit card anyway (less fees). Then they can educate the customer who comes in. That customer then takes the knowledge somewhere else and so on.
This is a common issue that affects all businesses in this country and stems from our Ease of Doing Business issues. Everyone is affected by this with no meaningful solution in sight.
All of the checks and balances that are in place just slow everything down. Can't get your Business License until your garbage is picked up. Can't clear your items at Customs until your Real Property Tax is paid.
If the confirmations happened quickly, it wouldn't be an issue but that seems impossible. But you can wait for weeks for a TCC just to be denied because the NIB you paid online wasn't applied to your account so it looks like you haven't paid in months.
Why can't the Tax Compliance Certificate be automatic? Let it be a 'status' that anyone can view online rather than an actual certificate. If something expires, you have a week or however long to correct it before your 'status' goes from compliant to non-compliant.
With all of these nuances I often wonder how any business can get away with ANY unpaid taxes let alone the millions of dollars' worth that we keep hearing about....
If we ban pitbulls then there will be a problem with Rottweilers or some other 'tough' breed.
The issue is the lack of responsibility of the owners.
Follow the law and punish the owners for their recklessness. Make them fall in line first and stop blaming the dogs for doing what they have been trained to do by these terrible owners.
If you shoot the dog, the cycle doesn't end - the owner will just get a new dog and do the same thing again.
There are plenty of well mannered pitbulls on this island.
You ever noticed how people only get attacked by dogs that are owned by someone? I can't remember the last time I heard of a true stray potcake that attacked someone...
The print version of this article is mixed up with a different article on roadways. Second time this has happened in recent times that I've noticed. Both articles are similar but different stories. The 2nd half of the roadway article is therefore printed twice in the Business section - B2 and B4
