Some of what all of you are saying could well be true but he is a good speaker and I delight in hearing him expound on any number of topics. No leader is perfect but he has a way of holding your attention and getting the point across. No wonder the PLP are terrified of him at this time in the campaign. I would be terrified if he were on my case!
Whoever wins there is nothing good to be expected. Taxes will have to be constantly and gradually increased in order to provide some sort of a social safety net for the majority of the population who will struggle to take care of themselves with a constantly increasing cost of living. Add to that the inexorable population increase and expanding unemployment and you have a perfect storm in a small place. Any devaluation of the currency will be the final step in complete and total destruction of the country as we know it today. All the election foolishness is purely noise in the market since the politicians refuse to address the systemic underlying problems facing the country for which they have no real solutions. From what I can hear, the candidates don't expect to have to address the real issues since the general public neither demands that they do so nor expects them to do so. More than likely the average "Joe" in the crowd who is screaming and foaming at the mouth has no idea of what is fundamentally wrong with the country.
I swear that every time I see or hear of this man I immediately visualize him standing in front of a mirror at least once a day and saying "Mirror, mirror on the wall..." He is so full of himself it is something to marvel at. How is it that almost every lawyer thinks that they know everything while in reality they know very little beyond their field of study. In fact, their lack of knowledge in broader fields is what tends to damage a country in the long term but you will have a difficult time convincing them of this position.
Sounds to me like howls of fear and rage as the election draws near and the horror of uncertainty sets in. This crew must have a great deal riding on this election to be so direct in the application of their invective. But, then again, he knows the class and level of mentality he is playing to when he makes such comments. It appears that they neither expect nor demand more of him.
If the PLP is so sure of its popularity why should the party fear the appearance of Vincent Peet in the arena? This campaign is looking more and more like 1992 and the PLP is well aware of what that means.
It might be open today but this morning there was the usual crowd of people and vehicles outside the old clinic along the main road just south of downtown Marsh Harbour.
Madam Editor, you are preaching to the converted. However, the masses do not understand what a devaluation of the Bahamian Dollar would do to the economy almost overnight. They think that our dollar is the US dollar or some other international reserve currency. They have no understanding of the real world out there beyond our borders. In this country many (if not most) people have become so spoiled and insulated from harsh realities that they cannot conceive of a changed situation. They are not aware of the history of many (if not most) of the local currencies in this region. We have been living in a bubble for a few generations always shielded from unpleasant reality by the propensity of successive governments to borrow and spend while protecting the general public from those same harsh realities. I regret to say that we could be in for a very unpleasant surprise in the not too distant future. I hope that I will be proven wrong.
