Everyone is missing the obvious solution here. Open free abortion clinics in every area of Nassau. Give out loyalty cards, frequent flier points, Air Miles, turkeys, hams, cell phone minutes, payment of one-months rent and double your coupon values for two or more abortions. After your third scratch-and-win post-abortion prize is revealed is revealed, you can have a free voluntary sterilization with a trip to Florida as an enticement. PLP supporters get an automatic lobotomy as well to improve their thinking processes by taking away all harmful thoughts of voting for their party.
For men, you get a free Glock 9 millimeter if you have a vasectomy. Bring a friend and you get some bullets to go with it.
It would be a helluva lot cheaper than putting all of these people on welfare. And it would cure the problem.
Children raising children as single parents on limited incomes is a huge problem in the Bahamas, and it is a drag on the entire social fabric. This idea that every child is a gift from god and may grow up to be the prime minister has got to go. There is no social stigma in having a child out of wedlock. And there are no easy answers to solving the problem other than the long term view of education. Social engineering, like China's one child law has unintended consequences, but it did work reducing the explosive and unmanageable population growth.
We really do need to solve the unwed mother problem, and the societal strictures like the churches have proven that they are unable to do so. In the meantime, the baby factories are producing throw-away people that are consigned to poverty, illiteracy, crime and joblessness.
You raise a lot of points that are truly valid. First, let's take the US correspondent banks. Did you know, that Belize has been so de-risked that there is only one bank left where you can send money out of the country and pay in Belize dollars? You can't wire transfer out of any bank but that one. The rest of them only deal with local currency. So if you are buying food, or stocking your stores, and you need to buy foreign supplies, you have to have an account at that bank. And if you are a AML or KYC risk, you can't open an account at that one bank. That is the future of the Bahamas. The good news is that the numbers kings cannot pass the AML/KYC risk and their money will be only as good as monopoly money.
As for FDI and people wanting to do business, the word is already out what Crisco Butt did to Izmirlian, and FDI has dried up at an alarming rate. The biggest cause of foreigners not wanting to do business in the Bahamas any longer, is the cosying up to the Chinese by the PLP. That has all sorts of risk for American/Canadian or British capital -- especially when they see how the Chinese are favoured over any other nationality.
The suffering of ordinary Bahamians is really increasing, and we haven't seen the worst of it yet. The only hope is that the devaluation brings a correction, and the outmoded ideas fly out the window, and that a phoenix rises from the ashes as a convertible currency, or a dollarization of the economy, such that Bahamians are no longer a child of a lesser god in the global village.
The wakeup call will be when the government goes to borrow more money for their profligate spending and are turned down. That is the only time that the PLP will realise that they kleptocracy days are numbered. Sadly none of the will see jail.
Nope ... they are a cancer on the FNM and like all cancers, they must be cut out and discarded. LBT needs to be drummed out of the FNM, mainly on the grounds that she has the moral compass of a PLP -- ie she has none. The cancer must be excised and thrown out.
Obviously Cable Bahamas doesn't think that BTC should amortize its capital costs in building the infrastructure into the price of the call termination. Like the saddest of Bahamians, always wants a piece of the pie that it isn't entitled to and has a sense of entitlement of something for nothing.
Many prominent business people have been preparing for it since the PLP came to power. One of the most common vehicles of preparation for business people against a devaluation calamity, is a quasi flow-through offshore corporation that traps some of their income stream in hard currency, domiciled offshore as well.
Then when the devalue-pocalypse comes, they whip out their foreign credit card from those offshore accounts and maintain their standard of living, or domicile themselves to where their flow-through corporation is, or live as expats in a friendlier environment.
As noted above, the smart money has already done so, and it is a little too late to start now.
