Work permits are the fuel for the economic engine of the Bahamas. Since we rely totally on Foreign Direct Investment to power the economy, we must accept that some of the skillset must be imported, and as such, work permits are not to be taken away capriciously or lightly. In many countries. a work permit is revoked only when the law is broken and a felony committed. While the manager was rude and crude to Bahamians, to my knowledge he broke no law.
The bigger picture is that we need the Memories jobs. We need the investment by the owners of Memories, and as such, the foolish capricious action of the Minister of Foreign Affairs rivals the foolish capricious action of the Prime Minister and the Attorney General in the sordid Baha Mar affair. This government is blatantly out of control and doesn't know how to behave like a civilised government. Their legacy is being written in these pages.
Bahamian MIT graduate working in the insurance field in Nassau with 4 years experience - $40,000.
Starting average salary MIT graduate in the US - $72,500. In Silicon Valley - $99,000.
Internships aren't gonna help. Canada just changed their rules. The old rules were that if you were a foreign Commonwealth student (say from the Bahamas) you were allowed to work for a year after graduation. The new rule is that you can now work for two years, and during the second year, you can apply for either permanent residency or landed immigrant status. It's a no-brainer.
This is a dangerous precedent. Yes the children's choir was unceremoniously kicked out. Yes, Bahamians were treated badly. However to interfere with business to withdraw work permits -- and to dispossess Baha Mar, just sends a message that you would be a fool to invest in the Bahamas, because the government in a whim, can interfere with your business, your hiring, and your investment.
I know of doctors who have bought basics like stools and lamps for the examining rooms, only to have them tiefed a couple of days later. Another doctor bought hams for Christmas for the personnel who helped him, and was bad-mouthed and verbally assaulted by the janitor and other support staff who didn't get a ham.
There are huge problems with medications disappearing from inventory and stuff like toilet paper being taken home by the staff.
None of that stuff happens at Doctors Hospital. Even the light bulbs disappear at PMH.
Universal Health Care is incredibly expensive, and if it is not delivered properly, it is worse than no health care because of long wait times, frazzled doctors leaving, lack of funds for correct delivery, etc.
This government has proven its incompetence in every way. If the PLP's brains were gunpowder, they couldn't blow their noses. NHI will be a national disaster and another brain drain as doctors leave for greener pastures.
The only doctors who want to relocate to the Bahamas are those who don't speak English very well.
Some northern remote communities in Canada are offering doctors $500,000 cash to relocate. And incidentally in Canada, a doctor can opt out of universal health care.
