Further to what John wrote, the amazing thing is how quickly we as a society have escalated to weapons and lethal violence against kith and kin, for the sake of food. Food, for crying out loud. What does that tell you about society? In a land of plenty, nobody gets killed for food. Not your brother-in-law for sure.
Once people's attitude transitions to weaponry,violence and murder, there is no turning back unless it is done with extraordinary means. The socio-economic fabric of the Bahamas is truly destroyed.
Had a colleague commit suicide a while ago. I had to clean out his desk and put all his stuff into a box for the family to pick up. In his desk was a bottle of the China Brush, plus some spray stuff that did the same thing.

My Auntie was using boongie cream under her eyes -- that Preparation H stuff to shrink piles. She looked like a raccoon with it on. She asked me to buy her the real stuff so she could stop using the round-yon-anus stuff. After she opened her gift, she applied it three times, and twenty minutes later was invoking the name of God for the miracle under her eyes. She went round batting her eyes at erryone hoping for comment on how young her eyes looked now. She swears by it. I think that it is just a skin tightener like egg white or something. However, it makes her happy. The happiness won't last long. The stuff is more expensive than an equivalent amount of cocaine, so I predict soon, it will be back to the rectal cream under da eyes.
Tal, I myself find little hope for optimism. The negativity is unfortunately our reality. For God's sake, you can't make this up - a jealous lesbian at a Supervalue supermarket party brings a loaded gun and shoots a man to death trying to stop her muggaging up another woman. Or a Prime Minister dispossessing an investor of 800 million dollars and selling out to a Communist country. Or the citizenry reveling in Junkanoo while 30% are jobless with no future. Or the loss of billions of dollars in a flight of capital from our "financial services". Or a national airline carrier deliberately not replacing a defective part and then trying to sue for millions. Or politicians telling folks to believe what they say, not what is seen with their own eyes. The same goes for preachers who use Jesus as a means to fleece the flock.
People are suffering. There is no help nor hope on the horizon. God is deaf to the prayers of those needing a job, or trying keeping a roof over their heads.
My own Christmas gifts this season were financial help for a wheel chair for a relative. For a niece, it was paying for cell phone minutes for an extended periods. My family had a list of things they wanted from me just to grease the skids of life and make it a little bit easier -- stuff like denture glue, inexpensive reading glasses, LED flashlights for when the current is off, books and magazines that are outrageously priced or unavailable at the Harbour Bay store, that beauty serum that makes old wrinkled eyes look young and stuff that foreigners take for granted, but are rare, expensive or unavailable for Bahamians stuck on the limestone rock.
We won't be able to have that chat on the dock. The Chinese hate Black Bahamians, and I'm assuming that you are of the same pigmentation class as I.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I'm okay, Jack, but almost everyone that I know isn't on a personal, family basis is not.

Businesses are in businesses to pursue economic ends, and as a result create jobs and well-being. The responsibility for societal norms lies elsewhere.
