I hope everyone is in agreement this industry needs to be driven out of existence. The threat of on board disease spreading is too high. This industry needs to be ended, not expanded. It needs to not be allowed to ever enter our waters again, people who wish to see the Bahamas can stay safely at one of our many hotels.
Let the billion dollar cruise ships sort out the mess they have created by using flags of convineance to lower their taxes to zero and avoid all regulation. If they want someone to bail them out of this mess and offload all their passengers they can submit an offer to the Government with a cheque attached, and if its not enough try another country. For the right offer we can consider if it is in the national interest.
No one wants anyone to go without power, but where is the government going to get the funds to pay for fuel? What incentive is there is to conserve on air conditioning if there is no disconnection to face? Clearly the debt repayment bond will have to be even bigger now when the markets eventually reopen to it. Who could ever pay the even greater costs down the road then?
Every KWH used requires precious US Dollars to go out the door to buy new fuel... Thus every KWH needs to be carefully used at this point, and ideally all electricity use kept as low as possible. So where is the ask for people to use as little power as possible?
We should have got our spending under control a long time ago to avoid this bind, and we should have been putting money aside for a national emergency fund long ago. Think I had suggested 2.5% in addition to normal VAT. It would have been geared for huricaines but clearly could have been used here too. We need to get our fiscal situation under control. If we don't, it will be the IMF that does so with all that loss of indepence this entails.
Not that I have love for insurance companies, but how will this affect their ability to finance and make payouts? And if they fold and declare bankruptcy will the government then take over their claim obligations?
There are a lot of questions which need thinking thru here I feel.
BPL needs to be sold ASAP so its off of the public books.
This process should occured years ago, we are so behind in terms of where we should be due to money going into things related to BPL that were totally non productive. Poor efficancy, super high rates, policital pressure to not collect all bills owed, the list goes on.
Rates will come down and it'll be on someone else to oversee BPL operations, the public voter has done a horrible job of it over the years to be totally honest. If people can not see that they must be blind.

Govt should restrict all aid to company's that will help the Bahamas supports its USD peg.
So in other words company's that do solar energy and will grow food locally.
Other than that no point in retaining workers for a tourism industry with no 100% certain return date!

All good ideas, but we need a much bigger roll out, much quicker.
Every community needs its own local growing plans.

Which is why this can not happen. BPL needs to be sold immediately to a private owner, so its off government books at least for going forward.
