If borrowers can not get the private sector to loan them money as they are not sound why is the Bahamian tax payer loaning them the money with the Bank of the Bahamas simply the front for the inevitable bailout that must result?

Public funds are not for this and any government connection to this or any other bank should end right away!

Great idea! Lets make Lighthouse Beach the first new state park!

Of course had they been allowed to use a pipe for deep water cooling for air conditioning which went out in the sea, this would not be a problem, nor would anyone need as much to drill for oil to power it all!

No deep water cooling for air conditioning, instead drill for oil, and if it doesn't spill, burn it, causing green house gas emissions to achieve power for the same goal, a better approach non?

Sell 100% of BEC to the qualified bidder that bids the most. Why is this hard? Other islands that have privatized their electricity do NOT have these problems.

There is no other solution.....

concerned799 says...

Quicker this is privatized to a reputable power operator the better.... Private power works reliably in other islands, so no need to reinvent the wheel on how to do it, just privatize it all, 100% ownership so serious power companies will be interested. No one is going to take only 49% that is a serious player with a track record!

Why can't BEC be sold outright to a reputable utility like Fortis or Emera? (who run utilities all over the Caribbean)

It should be clear to all burning oil at $100/barrel (inefficiently too it must be added) with the tab going to the national debt is NOT sustainable. the longer the process drags on, the more the BEC debt is, and thus the less the government can sell it for.

Pre-clear a few bidders, and the highest bid wins....

Further proof as if it was needed that replacing a hotel based tourism industry with a growing number of cruise ship visitors who spend $50 on Bay St is insufficient to pay for the bills of the Bahamas....

Where is the official discussion of "is this a good idea" ?

Further, where are the plans to take us to say light rail for passengers in Nassau to lower our fuel import bill? Why do we build new highways we can not afford in the long run to run cars on?

concerned799 says...

A wonderful contribution hotels make to our economy!

So why are we stacking the deck against them by facilitating ever larger cruise ships to come to the Bahamas? Why is the government not insisting industry invest in fixed land hotels, and not ever bigger ships that contribute so little?

Where is the analysis of which direction we should as a nation go?!

An empty mall. An economy struggling. But wait! Aren't cruise ships twice the size they used to be? Isn't the harbour full of them?!

Could it be a cruise industry driven tourism model does NOT work?

And if it doesn't why is the Bahamas not reconsidering what role if any cruise ships should play in its tourism development?

Why are we burning (very dirty) bunker C when the sun is there for free? Panels are way cheap now from China, so where are the plans to move us to emission free solar?!
